Bloody Big Balkan Battles: Hungary 1848-1849

Blood of Ancients: Wargame Rules

Blood of Ancients: Wargame Rules. D10-based miniatures rules with minimal references to charts, concentrates on charge and maneuver. Command radius allows for inspiration, but out-of-command troops are unreliable. We recommend using a hexgrid (less arguments) on the table, with one unit per hex. A unit is composed of four to twelve bases of figures. One stand of 15mm figures or one individually based 28mm figure still equals 40 to 50 combatants. If you don't have or like hexes, the rules provide conversion info to free-form measurements. Protect your flanks, use skirmishers to shield other units, and cavalry can be a powerful offensive weapon, but shaky in defense. Massed troops will last longer in combat, but ranged weapons are most effective when fired at massed troops. $30.00 USD

Phil Barker's Horse and Musket Wargaming Rules: 1685-1845 (1979). First published in 1971, with a second edition in 1979, these rules were revolutionary for their time. They were written to allow wargamers to replay even the largest battles from the horse-and-musket era (1685-1845). This popular set of rules were in use primarily for Seven Years War and the Napoleonic Wars for over 25 years. The approximate ratio was one figure, representing 40 to 50 men. This scale made it feasible to recreate historical battles upon the tabletop at the grand-tactical level. Wargamers used them for Marlborough's battles, the Highland rebellions, the battles of Frederick the Great, in addition to the Seven Years War, the War of American Independence, campaigns in India, the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. The rules included three pages of sample army lists for the Marlburian era, the Seven Years War, and the early Indian Wars. $24.00 USD

The Ottoman Army of the Napoleonic Wars 1784-1815: A Struggle for Survival from Egypt to the Balkans

The Ottoman Army of the Napoleonic Wars 1784-1815: A Struggle for Survival from Egypt to the Balkans. Examines the changes and development of the Ottoman army from its campaigns against the Bedouin in Iraq in the 1780s until the Serbian uprisings in 1804-13 and 1815. It also includes a detailed description of the dress and equipment of the Ottoman soldiers of this period. The Ottoman Empire was only marginally affected by the conflicts of the Napoleonic era; however, the period between the 1780s and 1820s was very important for the history and institutions of the multicultural state. Scholars working on the Ottomans in the Balkans, Anatolia, Egypt, and Syria have reached something of a consensus about these years as a watershed for the Ottomans. It was a moment when reform became necessary, not just as a palace experiment, but as a matter of life and death for the dynasty and empire alike. $60.00 USD

And Don't Forget the Magazines

World at War #86: The Chaco War, 1932-1935

World at War #86: The Chaco War, 1932-1935. The Chaco War was fought out by two landlocked countries, Bolivia and Paraguay in South America. On paper, the Bolivians should win handily: they enjoyed a 3:1 superiority in manpower against the Paraguayans. However, to reach the front, the Bolivians had to overcome long lines of communication, impossible terrain, and low morale. The Paraguayans, on the other hand, saw the war as a life-or-death struggle. Thanks to their superior morale and leadership, the Paraguayans inflicted a series of defeats to the Bolivians and won most of the Chaco territory in the post-war peace settlement. Components: 22 x 34 inch map, 176 die-cut counters, and magazine. $50.00 USD

OMM Discount 10%: Now $45.00 USD.
