For a POW camp, the barrier keeps the prisoners in. Colonies need them to keep the hostile wildlife out.

For military applications, you may not block fire (but you may, if they're force shields), but you do block the avenue that the assault troops will have to take to break in. You can also fire OUT. Smaller bunkers, trenches, etc can block fire to specific parts where the gunners might be stationed.

Consider this: if these are laser barriers, then the logistical burden of setting this up is the power system plus the fence posts-- ie minimal considering that you need the power system for energy weapons anyway.

If they're logs, then they can be gathered locally.

From a gaming perspective, an obstacle that blocks movement but not visibility or shooting is useful in many scenarios. You might take the fence down if you can use indirect fire to hit the generator (remove the fluorescent bars and allow troops to move through them).

Anyway, if you don't like them, don't buy them of course. I'm a fan.
