The Hospitaller Knights of Saint John at Rhodes 1306-1522

The Hospitaller Knights of Saint John at Rhodes 1306-1522

First of a series of volumes on the Hospitaller Knights of Saint John, this volume covers the rise of the Hospitaller Knights from monastic origins to military prowess, shedding light on their pivotal role in Crusades and Mediterranean power dynamics. Draws on the work of the Order's official historians, Giacomo Bosio and his successor Bartolomeo dal Pozzo. Transcribes their writings for the modern reader, while also presenting new information revealed in the 400 years of scholarship since Bosio's death in 1627. This volume opens with Hospitaller relocation from Cyprus to Rhodes during the years 1306 to 1309 while introducing other entities wielding power in the Eastern Mediterranean, including Mamluk Egypt, Turkish beyliks emerging from disintegration of the Seljuk Empire, the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire, Cyprus itself, and not least, the Republic of Venice controlling most Aegean islands. Brings to light the contributions of Hospital leaders (Grand Masters) as well as of lieutenants, allies and opponents, including those of Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, who became Grand Master in 1521. $43.00 USD

Dranesville: A Northern Virginia Town in the <em>Crossfire</em> of a Forgotten Battle, December 20, 1861

Dranesville: A Northern Virginia Town in the Crossfire of a Forgotten Battle, December 20, 1861

Details the story of Dranesville and the early war in Northern Virginia. Examines life after a Union victory, as no one knew what was coming, but soon civilians (sympathetic to both sides) were thrown into a spreading civil war of their own as neighbor turned on neighbor. Uses overlooked or underused sources to bring readers from the White House and Charleston's Secession Hall to midnight ambushes and the climactic Dranesville action. A host of characters and commanders that would become household names cut their teeth during these months, including Generals J. E. B. Stuart and Edward Ord. The men of the Pennsylvania Reserves saw their baptism of fire at Dranesville, setting the Keystone State soldiers on a path to becoming one of the best combat units of the entire war. Examines the naval aspects of the Spanish Civil War, including details as the first aerial campaign against shipping and the first operational use of sonar against a submarine. These attacks also involved dozens of foreign merchantmen and warships, including American, as well as hundreds of men, women, and boys. Blood in the Trenches: A Memoir of the Battle of the Somme

Blood in the Trenches: A Memoir of the Battle of the Somme

Written by Captain A. Radclyffe Dugmore of the Kings Own Light Infantry, this memoir provides an account of the Great War up to the Battle of the Somme. In 1914, Radclyffe Dugmore traveled to Belgium as a civilian observer where he was wounded before spending a brief time in German captivity. These experiences gained Radclyffe Dugmore a highly unusual viewpoint for the opening battles of the war, that of a civilian, and later as a participant on the front lines of the Somme. Originally published under the title When The Somme Ran Red in 1918, this memoir has been long out of print. This new re-print is a worthy addition to the primary source literature of the Great War and casts new light on the experiences of the men who saw the terror of the Battle of the Somme firsthand. $30.00 USD

Combat in the Stratosphere: Extreme Altitude Aircraft in Action During WWII

Combat in the Stratosphere: Extreme Altitude Aircraft in Action During WWII

Explores the development and use of aircraft designed specifically for high-altitude operations in World War II. Looks at the German Junkers Ju 86P that were able to fly over 40,000 feet, which ushered in a new era of aerial combat. Others included the Vickers Wellington Mk.VI, Vickers Windsor, Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Junkers Ju 388, Heinkel He 274, and Henschel Hs 130. With pressurized cabins, such aircraft offered obvious tactical advantages: bombers and reconnaissance aircraft could operate safely above the maximum ceiling of the opposing side's fighters, prompting intense development – especially by the British and Germans – of pressurized interceptors to meet the threat they posed. Also focuses on the men who flew these revolutionary aircraft, both in the testing phase and in combat, and the physical challenges these airmen faced. Contains 32 mono illustrations. $43.00 USD

Strategy & Tactics #347: Operation Holland

Strategy & Tactics # 347: Operation Holland

Operation Holland is a two-player alternative history wargame that is the second volume of a series of four games, the Alternative Battles of the Bulge Series. Each game uses a situationally adapted version of the same overall system to collectively cover all the various plans Hitler considered historically for his winter counteroffensive. Each game turn represents twelve hours. Each hexagon on the map is three km (1.86 miles) from side to opposite side. The maneuver units for both sides are primarily divisions, but also include some separate brigades, regiments, battalions, and companies. Allied air supremacy is (just as it was historically) hampered by the winter weather prevalent across the fighting front for most of the period covered by the game, and it is therefore represented only abstractly regarding those effects. Speculates on the first eight days of fighting across northern Belgium and southeast Netherlands had Hitler decided to launch his massive counteroffensive toward Antwerp from there instead of the Ardennes. Such a German effort, if maximally successful, would likely have caused a three-to-four-month delay in the historic timeline of the Anglo-American advance into Germany. In turn, that would have allowed Hitler to concentrate greater forces in Poland to seriously slow or defeat the Soviet offensive there in January, causing a similar delay in the Red Army's seizure of Berlin. Components: 22 x 34-inch game map, 176 5/8-inch counters, and magazine. $50.00 USD
