388 Naval Battle of Crete 1941: The Royal Navy at Breaking Point

388 Naval Battle of Crete 1941: The Royal Navy at Breaking Point. Campaign series. Examines the 1941 naval battles around Crete as the British Royal Navy helped evacuate troops from Greece and then Crete, all the while under aerial attacks by the Italian and German air forces. Offers a fresh insight into this strategically important battle that marked a turning point in the naval war for the Mediterranean and also witnessed the first use of new elements in naval warfare: the mass use of aircraft to contest control of the sea, and the use of Ultra intelligence to forestall the Axis invasion of Crete. Despite a heavy butcher's bill of dozens of Royal Navy ships lost and damaged, and hundreds of Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed, the Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet would live to fight another day. Usual graphical excellence of maps, photos, and artworks expected in a Campaign series volume. $25.00 USD

By the time the Task Force exited the South China Sea, over 300,000 tons of enemy shipping and dozens of Japanese warships had been sunk. With follow-up air strikes against Japanese harbors and airfields in Formosa and the Ryukyu Islands, the success of the sweep was unprecedented. $25.00 USD

316 Soviet Tanks in Manchuria 1945: The Red Army's Ruthless Last Blitzkrieg of World War II. New Vanguard series. Explains the last blitzkrieg of World War II as the Soviets planned, fought, and defeated the Japanese in Manchuria. Lessons from the campaign directly shaped Soviet Cold War force structure and planning for mechanized operations against NATO in Europe. Illustrated with contemporary artwork and rare photos from one of the best collections of Soviet military photos in the West. Although long overshadowed in the West by the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the U.S.S.R.'s lightning strike into Manchuria in August 1945 was one of the most successful and unique campaigns of the era. Soviet forces, led by over 5,500 tanks and self-propelled guns, attacked across huge distances and deserts, marshes and mountains to smash Japan's million-strong Kwantung Army in a matter of days. $20.00 USD

Books…

The Army of the Early Roman Empire: 30 BC-AD 180 – History, Organization and Equipment

The Army of the Early Roman Empire: 30 BC-AD 180 – History, Organization and Equipment. Describes the tactics, organization and equipment of the Roman army at the height of its powers, considered by many to be the most efficient and powerful fighting force of the ancient world. Provides an overview of the most significant campaigns, and considers in detail not only the iconic legionaries but also the various auxiliary units, including cavalry. Supported by dozens of color photos of replica weapons, armor and other kit in use. This was the army that enforced the so-called Pax Romana at the point of a gladius and maintained the greatest empire the world had yet seen. Of course, such troops were also employed to bloody effect in the many civil wars. $43.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $36.55 USD.

The Trojan War as Military History. Assumes that the Iliad, notwithstanding the fantastical/mythological elements (the involvement of gods and demigods), is the earliest detailed description of warfare we have. Stripping away the myths, it analyses the epic and combines it with other textual and archaeological evidence to produce a coherent narrative of the conflict and of Bronze Age warfare in the Aegean. Presents a detailed analysis of Mycenaean Greek armies – their composition and organization, the warriors' weapons, armor and tactics, and those of their enemies. Finds sophisticated combined-arms forces blending massed infantry with missile troops and chariots, employing open battle, deception and special operations in what amounted to total war. The author's detailed examination of the mechanics of Bronze Age combat is enriched by his use of insights from experimental archaeology using replica equipment. Also covers the minutiae of heroic duels and the geopolitical relationship of the Mycenaean Greeks with their rivals across the Aegean. $43.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $36.55 USD.

War Along the Wabash: The Ohio Indian Confederacy's Destruction of the U.S. Army, 1791. Describes how a small band of determined Native Americans defended their homeland in 1791, destroyed an invading American army led by Arthur St. Clair, and forced a fundamental shift in the way in which the United States waged war. Also puts the battle into the context of the last quarter of the 18th Century, exploring how the central importance of land ownership to Europeans arriving in North America resulted in unrelenting demographic pressure on indigenous tribes, as well as the enormous obstacles standing in the way of the fledgling American Republic in paying off its enormous war debts. $38.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $32.30 USD.

Hood's Defeat Near Fox's Gap: Prelude to Emancipation. Analysis of Confederate Brigadier General John Bell Hood's troop movements during the battle of South Mountain. For the past 160 years, all other authors misplaced Hood's troop positions on the Fox's Gap battlefield by approximately a half-mile. The actual location of Hood's attack reconfigures the entire placement of the competing forces in the battle and, thus, the conclusions one makes about the struggle. The failure to understand the topographical characteristics of the battlefield led other writers to make false assumptions about Hood's movement. $35.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $29.75 USD.

The Spanish Navy in the War of 1898. Examines the state of the Spanish Navy at the start of the Spanish-American War of 1898, before looking at its performance in the various theaters of the conflict against the U.S. Includes a number of detailed tables comparing and contrasting the two fleets. Detailed lists of the ships and their particulars, along with a list of the civilian ships impressed into wartime service by both combatants. $60.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $51.00 USD.

Dark Waters, Starry Skies: The Guadalcanal-Solomons Campaign, March-October 1943. Analysis combines with microscopic attention to detail and an engaging style to describe how, despite missteps and misfortunes, the tide of the Pacific War finally turned in the Allies' favor. By the end of February 1944, thanks to hard-fought and costly American victories in the first and second naval battles of Guadalcanal, the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, and the Battle of Cape St. George, the Japanese would no longer hold the materiel or skilled manpower advantage. From this point on, although the war was still a long way from being won, the American star was unquestionably on the ascendant, slowly, but surely, edging Japanese imperialism towards its sunset. $35.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $29.75 USD.

Brotherhood of the Flying Coffin: The Glider Pilots of World War II. Distills WWII down to individual young men climbing into defenseless gliders made of plywood, ready to trust the towing aircraft that would pull them into enemy territory by a single cable wrapped with a telephone wire. Based on their after-action reports, journals, oral histories, photos and letters home, it reveals every terrifying minute of their missions. $30.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $25.50 USD.

The Soviet Destruction of Army Group South: Ukraine and Southern Poland 1943-1945. Analyzes late 1943 Soviet offensive that started the decline in German Army Group South and ended up driving into Poland and the Balkans through 1944 and into 1945. Draws on rare and previously unpublished images accompanied by detailed captions and text, plus offensives coincided with other Red Army operations further north, including the Lublin-Brest Offensive – part of Operation Bagration. $29.00 USD

Magazines With Wargames…

World at War #89: The Crimean Campaign 1941-1942 (Wargame)

World at War #89: The Crimean Campaign 1941-1942 (Wargame). Strategic-level, two-player wargame (with strong operational undertones) of low-intermediate complexity covering the fighting across the peninsula that climaxed with the German capture of Sevastopol. The game's action took place historically between 28 October 1941 and 4 July 1942. The first date marks the German entry into the Crimea via the Perekop Isthmus, while the second marks the end of organized Soviet resistance across the whole peninsula. Those nine calendar months are divided into chronologically varied and unequal numbers of turns. That approach allows for the convenient simulation of the ebbs and flows in the action that took place due to bad weather and logistical and command-control constraints. Magazine articles include Japan's Indian Ocean Raid, Strategic Heavy Lift, and Fortress Battle 1944. Components: 22 x 34 inch map, 228 9⅙" die-cut counters, and magazine. $50.00 USD

OMM Discount 10%: Now $45.00 USD.
