Caracalla: A Military Biography

Caracalla: A Military Biography. Caracalla has one of the worst reputations of any Roman Emperor. Many ancient historians were very hostile, and Edward Gibbon later dubbed him the common enemy of mankind. Yet his reign was considered by at least one Roman author to be the apogee of the Roman Empire. Guilty of many murders and massacres (including his own brother, ex-wife, and daughter), he was popular with the army by improving their pay and cultivating the image of sharing their hardships. Includes 30+ maps, 50 black-and-white line drawings, and 16 pages of plates. $29.00 USD

The Italian Army in the First World War: The Grey-Green Uniforms from 1909 to 1919

The Italian Army in the First World War: The Grey-Green Uniforms from 1909 to 1919. Covers all the models of the army's field uniform from the time the new uniform was introduced to the end of the war. Includes illustrations of more than 350 uniforms, caps, hats, and helmets sourced from public and private collections. Uniforms include the traditional formations (infantry, Granatieri, Alpini, Bersaglieri, artillery, cavalry, Carabinieri, Financial Guard, engineers, medical and logistical services), as well as those of the newer branches of service that had emerged as a result of modern warfare (mortar formations, machine-gun troops, Arditi, Military Air Corps). Contemporary black-and-white photographs show how the items of dress were worn in action. In addition, the two volumes include numerous short biographies and bequests from prominent figures such as Luigi Cadorna, Armando Diaz, Gabriele d'Annunzio, Cesare Battisti, Damiano Chiesa, Fabio Filzi, Ettore Lajolo and the Calvi brothers, and formations like the 87th Air Force Squadron, which flew a daring mission over the enemy city of Vienna in August 1918. Includes organizational information of regular and specialist units of the Italian Army. 2-volume, 872 pages. $249.00 USD

The Second Baron's War: Simon de Montfort and the Battles of Lewes and Evesham. Describes the Barons' War events in the mid-13th Century, and explores the leading personalities whose bitter quarrel gave rise to the conflict – Henry III, his son Prince Edward (later Edward I), and their most famous opponent, Simon de Montfort, whose masterful charisma galvanized support among the discontented nobility. The clash of interests between the king and his overmighty subjects is reconsidered, as are the personal and political tensions that polarized opinion and tested loyalties to the limit. The main emphasis is on the two major campaigns that determined the course of the war and indeed the future government of England – the battles fought at Lewes and Evesham. $30.00 USD

Britain Against the Xhosa and Zulu Peoples: Lord Chelmsford's South African Campaigns. Chelmsford's military career and Britain's troubled relationship with the Xhosa people came together in 1878 with the conclusion of the 9th Frontier War, in which Chelmsford commanded the victorious British forces. This conflict is vividly described here. Perhaps Chelmsford learned the wrong lessons from his struggle with the Xhosa, because his initial handling of British forces during the Anglo-Zulu War resulted in disaster at the Battle of Isandlwana. Although Chelmsford regained the initiative and his forces defeated the Zulus at Gingindlovu and Ulundi, his reputation never recovered. $50.00 USD

The 170 illustrations include 18 original color photos and 18 color profiles. $25.00 USD

Vae Victus Board Game #32: Wattignies 1793

Vae Victus Board Game #32: Wattignies 1793. At the end of summer 1793, the French thwarted the English Army's attempted siege of Dunkerque by their victory at Hondschoote on their Hanoverian allies. This setback did not disrupt the plans of Austria's Prince of Coburg. With the Austrian Army, he lay siege to Maubeuge, one of the last citadels protecting the border from northern France. It could not hold out long. Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, the new commander of the Army of the North, spurred on by Lazare Carnot, prominent war minister for the Committee of Public Safety, quickly assembled 45,000 troops to clear the area. On October 15, 1793, the French launched disjointed attacks and were unsuccessful. Scale: Units: Brigades, regiments or battalions; 1 strength point equals 500-1000 infantry, or 300-600 cavalry; Map: 600 meters per hex; Turn: 90 minutes; Complexity: 6/9. Game Components: One 59 x 41 cm map; 216 die-cut counters and markers; One booklet of rules; Two player-aid cards. $38.00 USD
