Well, a firm mantra in my skirmish games is "They are who I say they are, and their weapons are what I say they are."
At even 25/28mm scale, I see little difference between various long arms, whether a musket, carbine or Remington. With the current trend of mixing weapons in a blister or bag, it's very expensive, and impractical, to isolate and present on the table exactly the "correct" weapons.
