Cerdic: Mysterious Dark Age King Who Founded England

Cerdic: Mysterious Dark Age King Who Founded England

Bio of the Dark Age king, Cerdic, who founded Wessex, which grew into England. Reveals how Cerdic emerged from the ashes of Rome in the 6th Century, with a warband known as the Gewisse which offered protection to civilians from roaming barbarians. He fought for territory with rival kingdoms before evolving into the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. Discusses the identity of his shadowy son, the location of every bloody battle against enemy warlords, links to an iconic medieval poem, and the King Arthur legend. Also notes the discovery of his potential burial site on the edge of a Hampshire town. A huge barrow was located near a historic trackway, a Wansdyke-style earthwork, and an old Roman road as a very public statement of power and warning to enemies. The Teutonic Knights Strike East: The 14th Century Crusades in Lithuania & Rus

The Teutonic Knights Strike East: The 14th Century Crusades in Lithuania & Rus

Explores the Medieval crusade aimed at Lithuanian pagans, when crusaders from the Holy Roman Empire, France, England, and Scotland came to Prussia to fight alongside the Teutonic Knights. What ensued was a long-drawn out, many-sided struggle, with Lithuania and Poland first becoming powerful states, then expanding into Belarus and Ukraine, where the Mongols and Tatars had long held sway. The campaign culminates with Lithuania, converting to the Roman Catholic Church and the dramatic sieges of Vilnius. Includes eight pages of black-and-white plates, and eight pages of color plates. $35.00 USD

The Sieges of Rhodes: 1480 & 1522

The Sieges of Rhodes: 1480 & 1522

Examines the two epic sieges of Rhodes, when the Hospitallers of the Order of St. John faced the might of the Ottomans. Photographs and maps included in the book fully illustrate what a nearly impossible task the Ottomans faced in both sieges. The two sieges illustrate the changes in warfare in the 40 years between them and the revolution in artillery that was taking place. Both sieges were epic in their character and scale, and added to the fame and prestige of the Hospitallers. The Grand Masters, on both occasions, provided inspiration not only for the garrisons but for Christendom. The sieges occurred in a critical period in Europe's political, religious and military history. This book considers the medieval fortification and their transformation in the intervening years, according to the most up-to-date ideas. Outlines the artillery revolution that occurred over the same period, with the massive, clumsy, but still powerful stone-throwing bombards giving way to narrow-bore cast-bronze pieces, firing iron projectiles at much higher velocities and with much greater effect. Contains 104 color photos, 20 maps, and 2 tables. $50.00 USD

The Army of the Kingdom of Italy, 1805-1814: Uniforms, Organization, Campaigns (Revised Edition)

The Army of the Kingdom of Italy, 1805-1814: Uniforms, Organization, Campaigns (Revised Edition)

A revised and expanded edition of the study of the uniforms, organization, personnel and campaigns of that army. Illustrated in full-color throughout, with over 100 color illustrations, this study covers not just the regulation uniforms, although unusually, the regulations were somewhat sparse, but also the numerous variations recorded in contemporary documents and plates, and in surviving items. Also covers the little-known, and highly esoteric, provisional uniforms of the Army's early years. The uniforms of what the French called the Tete de Colonne were never regulated properly and could change from issue to issue and year to year, often depending solely on the availability of cloth or the personal idiosyncrasies of the Colonel. Attempts to cover all of the known changes and variations in these uniforms including some additional variations since the first edition. Contains 124 color illustrations and photos, 29 black-and-white illustrations, one color map, and tables throughout. $50.00 USD

Tullahoma: The Forgotten Campaign That Changed the Course of the Civil War – June 23 – July 4, 1863

Tullahoma: The Forgotten Campaign That Changed the Course of the Civil War – June 23 – July 4, 1863

Details how William S. Rosecrans's Army of the Cumberland pushed back Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee entirely out of Middle Tennessee. The brilliant campaign nearly cleared the state of Rebels and changed the calculus of the Civil War in the Western Theater, but went largely unnoticed due to other events. On June 23, 1863, Rosecrans, with 60,000 men, began a classic campaign of maneuver against Bragg's 40,000. Confronted by rugged terrain and a heavily entrenched foe, Rosecrans intended to utilize strategic maneuver to defeat Bragg rather than direct assaults. The complex and fascinating campaign included deceit, hard marching, fighting, and incredible luck – both good and bad. Contains first-hand accounts, 50 images, and 16 maps. $25.00 USD

An Army of Brigadiers: British Brigade Commanders at the Battle of Arras 1917

An Army of Brigadiers: British Brigade Commanders at the Battle of Arras 1917

Provides an analysis of command at the level of the infantry brigade within the British Expeditionary Force's command structure. Based on a critical period during the Great War, the period from late in the Battle of the Somme to the end of the Battle of Arras in mid-May 1917, analysis is drawn from the service records of 116 brigadier-generals whose brigades played some part in the Battle of Arras. Explores their roles, responsibilities and backgrounds, both in theory and in practice, in the lead-up to and during the battle, to explain and illustrate the range and limitations of their commands. Then presents case studies of five brigadier-generals, their staff officers, and their battalion commanders. Research is drawn from a wide variety of sources, including diaries, letters, and personal papers privately held by descendants. Contains 32 photos, 16 color maps, 25 tables. $70.00 USD

The King's Men: The Sandringham Company & Norfolk Regiment Territorial Battalions, 1914-1918

The King's Men: The Sandringham Company & Norfolk Regiment Territorial Battalions, 1914-1918

Examines the usage of the Norfolk Regiment and the Sandringham Company in World War I. The latter was the only unit to be raised entirely from a Royal Estate, and tragically the company, along with King George V's agent Captain Beck, disappeared without trace on August 12, 1915. The battalion was rebuilt and participated in the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign, being evacuated to Egypt in December 1915. Thereafter, the Norfolks served with distinction in Palestine as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Explores the history of these battalions' distinguished service using contemporary records and personal accounts. $35.00 USD

Monty's Greatest Battles: 1942-1945

Monty's Greatest Battles: 1942-1945

Explores Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, who had a dynamic personality that often led to difficulties with political or military superiors, but made him an immensely effective leader of men. His soldiers fought in some of the most important battles of WWII, that varied in type, terrain and tactics: river crossings including that of the Rhine; amphibious landings including the D-Day landings; defensive encounters including Alam Halfa and the Ardennes; mobile operations including the capture of Tripoli; the left hook at the Mareth Line; the dash from the Seine to the Scheldt culminating in the daring attempt to seize the Rhine bridges; and set-piece conflicts against enemies in prepared positions equipped with often superior weapons including Alamein and Normandy. In addition to describing the battles that made Montgomery the legendary military commander for which he is rightly remembered, this book examines both his qualities and weaknesses. Contains 32 mono illustrations. $50.00 USD
