The village of Stonne, located some 14km south of Sedan, had strategic significance, as you could see well into the Meuse Valley, as well as having a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. The position also could serve as a useful anchor for German defenses, or as a staging area for future French counterattacks. Therefore, both sides were determined to fight for it.
Initial French forces in the area were weak, having suffered losses during the abortive attacks at Bulson on the 14th. Deployed in and around Stonne, they were ordered to hold until reinforcements could arrive. Unknown to the French, the Gross Deutschland Infantry Regiment, attached to the 10th Panzer Division, has been ordered to take the heights and hold them. Air support would be made available, and should the regiment run into stiff resistance, they could call upon support from the 10th Panzer.
With the morning mists still covering the area and the sun barely showing, the defending French are alerted to the coming events by the explosions of concentrated artillery fire and the sirens of dive-bombing Stukas. The Battle for Stonne had begun.
