I know that they are advertised as artillery and I will have to do some research on how the Israel1's define artillery. In the U. S. Army I had the honor to lead an 81mm mortar platoon and an 107mm platoon. As mortars, we were an Infantry indirect fire system, not artillery. It may be a minor point, but the mortars are organic to the infantry and are the most responsive indirect fire system for infantry. Mortars, with shorter range, are also much closer to the forward edge of the battlefield while the artillery would be more in depth. In Flames of War, based on my combat experience, no problem with the mortars on the game board. |

When Israel started producing its own weapons, one of the most important was the Soltam 120mm mortar based on a Finnish design. This weapon was simple to manufacture, making it ideal for Israel's fledgling armaments industry, yet packed a hefty punch. Nearly half of Israel's artillery battalions were equipped with 120mm mortars in 1967.
Unusually for mortars, these weapons are fielded by the artillery and have the skills, equipment, and ammunition to fire sustained bombardments.
