Roman Emperor Zeno: The Perils of Power Politics in Fifth-Century Constantinople Examines the life and career of the fifth-century Roman emperor Zeno and the various problems he faced before and during his 17-year rule. Despite its length, his reign has hitherto been somewhat overlooked as being just a part of that gap between the Theodosian and Justinianic dynasties of the Eastern Roman Empire which is comparatively poorly furnished with historical sources. Reputedly brought in as a counter-balance to the generals who had dominated politics at the end of the Theodosian dynasty, Zeno quickly had to prove himself adept at dealing with the harsh realities of imperial power. Zeno's life and reign is littered with conflict and politicking with various groups – the enmity of both sides of his family; dealing with the fallout of the collapse of the Empire of Attila in Europe, especially the increasingly independent tribal groups established on the frontiers of, and even within, imperial territory; the end of the Western Empire; and the continuing religious strife within the Roman world. As a result, his reign was an eventful and significant one that deserves this long-overdue spotlight. $40.00 USD

Armies of the Late Roman Empire AD 284 to 476: History, Organization & Equipment Guide to the Late Roman Army focuses on the dramatic and crucial period that started with the accession of Diocletian and ended with the definitive fall of the Western Roman Empire. Describes the organization, structure, equipment, weapons, combat history and tactics of Late Roman military forces. The comitatenses (field armies), limitanei (frontier units), foederati (allied soldiers), bucellarii (mercenaries), scholae palatinae (mounted bodyguards), protectores (personal guards) and many other kinds of troops are covered. This was a turbulent period during which the Roman state and its armed forces changed. Includes 150 illustrations. $35.00 USD

Attila the Hun: Arch-Enemy of Rome Rising to the Hunnic kingship around 434, Attila the Hun dominated European history for the next two decades. Attila bullied and manipulated both halves of the Roman empire, forcing successive emperors to make tribute payments or face invasion. Ian Hughes recounts Attila's rise to power, attempting to untangle his character and motivations so far as the imperfect sources allow. A major theme is how the two halves of the empire finally united against Attila, prompting his fateful decision to invade Gaul and his subsequent defeat at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plain in 451. Integral to the narrative is analysis of the history of the rise of the Hunnic Empire; the reasons for the Huns' military success; relations between the Huns and the two halves of the Roman Empire; Attila's rise to sole power; and Attila's doomed attempt to bring both halves of the Roman Empire under his dominion. Includes twelve black-and-white maps and eight pages of color plates. $35.00 USD

William III's Italian Ally: Piedmont and the War of the League of Augsburg 1683-1697 cover

William III's Italian Ally: Piedmont and the War of the League of Augsburg 1683-1697 It is often assumed that the conflict was fought solely in Flanders and the Rhineland, and by mainly North West European Armies. This was not so. William of Orange, the driving force of the Grand Alliance in the fight against the French, considered the Italian aspect of the conflict to be of the greatest strategic importance. Piedmont, in north western Italy bordered France, and Italian armies were able to threaten the south of France with invasion. For the first time too, the nature of late 17th Century warfare in Italy is considered and the author examines organization, training and logistics. Military artist Bruno Mugnai enhances the book's text with eight specially commissioned color plates that illustrate the uniforms and flags of this highly visual period. Includes 25 black-and-white illustrations and maps and eight color plates. $45.00 USD

Fighting the French Revolution: The Great Vendee Rising of 1793 In 1793, France was facing foreign invasion along its borders and a fierce political war was raging in Paris when a large-scale revolt, centered on the western Department of the Vendee, suddenly erupted, almost bringing the new-born French Republic to its knees. This is the story of the new Republic's ferocious military campaigns against the armies of the Vendee, which fiercely defied them between March and December 1793, tying down hundreds of thousands of troops desperately needed on the frontiers. Napoleon later called it The War of Giants, and it directly led to the implementation of some of the Republic's most extreme laws. Includes 20 black-and-white illustrations, 54 maps, and tactical diagrams. $43.00 USD

Horses Worn to Mere Shadows: The Victorio Campaign 1880 This study commences with Victorio's return to New Mexico in January 1880. The U.S. army's January to February campaign illustrates the operational decoy strategy employed by Victorio to protect his own logistic support whilst simultaneously undermining that of his opponents. The Hembrillo Canyon operation in April 1880, saw the largest battle of the Victorio Campaign. By the end of May 1880, Victorio's warriors have rendered the Ninth Cavalry unfit for field service. This was achieved through the Apache strategy of directly and indirectly targeting the U.S. army's horses and mules. Yet the Apaches also suffer their first major defeat of the campaign at the end of May. After regrouping and engaging in widespread raiding in northern Mexico, Victorio engaged the Tenth Cavalry in Western Texas during July-August 1880. Includes 109 black-and-white photos, 25 color maps, two black-and-white sketches, 29 tables, and eight figures. $50.00 USD

L'Armee de Napoleon III: Dans La Guerre De 1870 Uniforms, equipment and weapons of all the Imperial Army corps are presented here with extraordinary uniform plates by Andre Jouineau, the famous illustrator-researcher. The texts are by Jean-Marie Mongin and go well beyond the customary details, delving into the organization and the strength of this formidable force. Discover the campaign clothes – and the great parade uniforms – of the Cent-Gardes squadron, the Guides, the Cuirassiers at Reichshoffen, the Marsouins at Bazeilles, the Hussars, the Turks, the Zouaves, but also that terrible year's Moblots (conscripts), the heroes of Bourbaki's army, and the volunteers of the last months of this war which was, when all is said and done, a foundational conflict. This volume is for the uniform and figurine buffs; it's a small, practical tool, precise, clear, logical and visual. Includes almost 140 uniform plates, maps, and more than 1000 infantry, artillery. and cavalry drawings. $58.00 USD

Greece 1941: The Death Throes of Blitzkrieg New study of the campaign in Greece in 1941 looks at the effectiveness of Blitzkrieg operations. The Germans overran Greece in three weeks, but the author claims that at no time did the Germans gain ascendancy over the token British and Anzac force sent to bolster the Greek defenders. They came close to doing so, but the Anzac troops and their Greek allies put up a spirited defense that sometimes turned the Germans' own methods against them. This perceptive new account should prompt a reassessment of the Greek campaign. It also offers a fascinating insight into the weaknesses of the Germans' all-conquering method of warfare which became increasing apparent during the later stages of the war. $35.00 USD
