Fire on the Volga
Stalingrad, U.S.S.R.
September 13-14, 1942

The Germans launched Case Blue on June 28th, 1942, and it seemed to be a complete success. Drives that resembled the territorial gains of 1941 were seen, and by September, German forces were pressing against the Volga River and moving into the Caucasus region with the goal of taking the Baku oilfields. The city of Stalingrad, holding the namesake of the Soviet dictator, seemed ripe for the picking. General Von Paulus's 6th Army was given the task of taking the city and removing the Volga River as a transit source for Soviet resources. Having continued to push his forces forward, Von Paulus launched his initial attack on the city on September 13th with the hopes of a quick assault and occupation before the Soviets could dig in. Unfortunately for the attacking Germans, the Soviet 62nd Army was determined to hold the city at all costs. The initial German attack on the southern portion of the city would see initial gains, but the deeper into the city the Germans moved, the harder it got to dislodge the stubborn Soviet defenders. Soon, the city would be known as "The Verdun on the Volga."

Known as the turning point of the war in the East, the battle for Stalingrad would last into the new year, with dire consequences for the Axis forces. What we present here are the conditions found on that September day in 1942 when the fate of the war laid in the balance.
