BOOKS…

 THE EMPEROR'S BOSNIAKS

THE EMPEROR'S BOSNIAKS

This book is produced in co-operation with the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum Vienna, the Austrian Federal Armed Forces, the Army Museum Budapest, and private collectors. Bosnia-Herzegovina was occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1878, annexed in 1908, and was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. This book – illustrated in color, includes 352 pages and nearly 600 photographs – presents a picture of the Bosnian soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army and their military history under Austro-Hungarian administration. The Bosniaks, who were seen as an elite group within the K.U.K. Army and who – with their strange uniform and fez headgear – attracted much attention from the various formations of the Austro-Hungarian Army, are the focus of the book. This richly-illustrated volume also offers a detailed view of the uniforms, equipment and weaponry of the Bosniaks, from the formation of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian infantry and Jager troops to their first deployment in WWI. Also includes short bios. $150.00 USD

THE MONGOL STORM: Making and Breaking Empires in the Medieval Near East

THE MONGOL STORM: Making and Breaking Empires in the Medieval Near East

Discusses the Mongol assault on the Near East in the Middle Ages and its enduring global consequences. In a single generation, the Mongols conquered vast swaths of the Near East and upended the region's geopolitics. Amid the chaos of the Mongol onslaught, long-standing powers such as the Byzantines, the Seljuk Turks, and the crusaders struggled to survive, while new players such as the Ottomans arose to fight back. The Mongol conquests forever transformed the region, while forging closer ties among societies spread across Eurasia. $35.00 USD

THE FIELD OF BLOOD: The Battle for Aleppo and the Remaking of the Medieval Middle East

THE FIELD OF BLOOD: The Battle for Aleppo and the Remaking of the Medieval Middle East

Examines the bitter conflict between the Franks and their Turkish enemies, when both factions were locked in a struggle for supremacy over the city of Aleppo. For the Franks, Aleppo was key to securing dominance over the entire region. For the Turks, this was nothing less than a battle for survival – without Aleppo they would have little hope of ever repelling the European invaders. The resulting 1119 Battle of the Field of Blood at Aleppo decisively halted the momentum gained during the First Crusade and decided the fate of the Crusader states. $35.00 USD

 THE WARS FOR ASIA, 1911-1949

THE WARS FOR ASIA, 1911-1949

Shows that the Western treatment of World War II, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Chinese Civil War as separate events misrepresents their overlapping connections and causes. The long Chinese Civil War precipitated a long regional war between China and Japan that went global in 1941 when the Chinese found themselves fighting a civil war within a regional war within an overarching global war. The global war that consumed Western attentions resulted from Japan's peripheral strategy to cut foreign aid to China by attacking Pearl Harbor and Western interests throughout the Pacific on December 7-8, 1941. S. C. M. Paine emphasizes the fears and ambitions of Japan, China and Russia, and the pivotal decisions that set them on a collision course in the 1920s and 1930s. The resulting wars – the Chinese Civil War (1911-1949), the Second Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945), and World War II (1939-1945) – together yielded a viscerally anti-Japanese and unified Communist China, the still-angry rising power of the early 21st Century. While these events are history in the West, they live on in Japan and especially China. $38.00 USD
