Kasserine Pass – 1943
Surprised by German forces at Sidi Bou Zid on February 14th, U.S. and Allied forces had suffered a series of defeats, and were falling back in a desperate attempt to find a place to stop the Axis advance. Several Allied positions at Sbeitla and the entrance to Kasserine Pass were hit hard by the following Axis forces, and in each case, Allied forces had to fall back under pressure. February 19th and 20th saw General Rommel make a number of probing attacks against Allied forces at Sbiba, Thala and the road net towards Tebessa.
Impressed by the stiff resistance at Sbiba, Rommel decided to make his main effort towards Thala and the Tebessa road net. With that in mind, the 10th Panzer Division was ordered to attack up the black-topped road from Kasserine Pass and take the town of Thala, while the KG DAK would make a massive assault on the two main roads towards Tebessa. Either attack, if successful, would unhinge the Allies' defensive line and force them back, possibly well into Algeria. As the sun rose on the morning of the 21st, both sides were prepared for a climatic struggle for dominance of... Kasserine Pass.
