The decks of these warships held the fighting complement of Greek citizen hoplites, Scythian archers, and Persian marines, and learn why the Greeks placed a bounty of 10,000 drachmae on the head of Artemisia – the Karian queen and Persian admiral, and the only woman among Xerxes' commanders. $22.00 USD

Presents first-hand experiences of the pilots who flew the Bf 109E, the aircraft which first featured a Daimler-Benz DB 601 powerplant, and which was in the front line in the skies over Poland, the Low Countries and France, and the older Bf 109D, still in use in the Polish campaign. $22.00 USD

028 D-DAY 1944: The Deadly Failure of Allied Bombing June 6. Air Campaign series. Despite an initial successful attack performed by the Allied forces, the most crucial phase of the operation, which was the assault from the Eighth Air Force against the defenses along the Calvados coast, was disastrous. The bombers missed almost all of their targets, inflicting little damage to the German defenses, which resulted in a high number of casualties among the Allied infantry. The primary cause of this failure was that planners at Eighth Air Force Headquarters had changed aircraft drop times at the last moment, to prevent casualties amongst the landing forces, without notifying either Eisenhower or Doolittle. This book examines this generally overlooked event in detail and offers a new perspective on a little-known air campaign packed with illustrations, maps and diagrams. $24.00 USD

308 Tanks at the Iron Curtain: 1960-75. New Vanguard series. Companion volume to NVG 301, Tanks at the Iron Curtain 1946-60, focuses on key battle tanks and their technology to give a comprehensive overall picture of how tanks developed during modern times. Examines the generational shift in tank design and warfare with the advent of CBR (chemical, biological, radiological) protection and a move away from Heat ammunition to APFSDS. This shift confronted the growing threat of guided anti-tank missiles and saw the introduction of composite armor. Soviet heavy tanks and tank destroyer/assault guns became obsolete, giving way to the technological might of the T-62 and T-64, while NATO forces employed the Chieftain, AMX-30, Leopard I, and M60, plus the initial attempt at a common U.S.-German tank, the MBT-70. $19.00 USD

Offers tactical detail, even down to company command, amidst strategic confusion surrounding the whole Allied expedition to the north too. Land battles include amphibious landings, sabotage, commando raids, ski missions, and a rare parachute insertion. Among the naval clashes covered in this action-packed story are the destroyer battles in the fjords, the sinking of the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious, and the roles the battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau played in the fighting. $24.00 USD

The Real Gladiator: The True Story of Maximus Decimus Meridius. Discover that fact is not only stranger than fiction, it is often more entertaining. The book also focuses on warfare, weapons and contemporary battles. It will compare the battle and fight scenes in the film with reality from contemporary sources and modern tests and reenactments. Britain and Rome: Caesar to Claudius: The Exposure of a Renaissance Fraud. Reassessment of the period from Julius Caesar's first forays into Britain to the invasion under the Emperor Claudius. Asserts that Caesar's initial cross-Channel adventures were motivated not so much by seeking the glory of taming primitive savages but to gain control of an economic powerhouse. Also argues that two of the most important Roman sources underpinning the conventional narrative are in fact Renaissance fakes and that their acceptance has distorted the interpretation of modern archaeological evidence. Meanwhile he reinstates a discounted British source. The result is a startlingly different version of Britain's early history. $35.00 USD

Baden Powell's Fighting Police – The SAC: The Boer War Unit That Inspired the Scouts. Rejecting army models of command, Baden-Powell created the South African Constabulary (SAC) in August 1900 with a small number of officers, dividing it into troops of 100 men, then sub-dividing again into sections and the key working unit – the squad of six men under a corporal. To get the caliber of recruit he wanted, the SAC would be better paid than the Army, and he expected the men to be motivated by a code of honor, to be self-reliant and handy men able to tackle any kind of work. Most recruits came from the U.K., but in Canada, however, the Governor General intervened and botched selection. Analyzes creation, development and effectiveness of the SAC and also highlights what Baden-Powell brought from the SAC and gave anew to the Scouts. $50.00 USD

World at War #85: Budapest (Wargame)

World at War #85: Budapest (Wargame). Budapest Campaign: October 1944 to February 1945 is a wargame of the Soviet offensive in Hungary in late 1944 and early 1945, which culminated in the conquest of the city of Budapest. Throughout this campaign, the Axis launched successive counterattacks which regained ground but, in the end, failed to stem the Soviet tide. There are two players: Axis and Soviets. Each side is divided into sub-commands. For the Axis, this includes Armee Kommando Nord, Armee Kommando Sud (these are not historical designators but are based on German operational practice by this period), and Hungarian forces. The Soviets have Second and Third Ukrainian Fronts, as well as the Romanian army. Budapest Campaign ends just prior to the start of Spring Awakening (World at War #73) which covers the final German offensive on the Eastern Front. Both games use a variant of the DG Boots system to model command/control and logistics. Various command markers activate player sub-commands and launch major offensives. Components: 22 x 34 inch map, 176 die-cut counters, and magazine. $50.00 USD
