Dacia: The Roman Wars – Volume I: Sarmizegetusa

Dacia: The Roman Wars – Volume I: Sarmizegetusa. Offers a fresh view on the Dacian-Roman wars, eliminating as much as possible from the ideological nationalist ballast that came to burden the Romanian view of history. Gathers and adapts old and new archaeological findings and historical studies and avoids too much speculation on events that remain unclear for history, but makes frequent use of words like perhaps and probably. On occasion, it ventures possible scenarios for the rare instances when historical or archaeological sources were more generous. Includes over 190 colored images: illustrations, artifacts, maps and monuments. $30.00 USD

Armies of the Germanic Peoples – 200 BC to AD 500: History, Organization and Equipment

Examines the evolution of Germanic weapons, equipment, and tactics and includes dozens of color photos of replica equipment in use. Shows how Germanic warriors were able to crush the Roman military forces on several occasions, gradually transform the Roman Army itself from the inside and, after the fall of the empire, create new Romano-Germanic Kingdoms across Europe. $35.00 USD

Ancient Greeks at War: Warfare in the Classical World from Agamemnon to Alexander. Examines the different fighting styles of Greek armies and discusses how Greek battles unfolded in a lavishly illustrated book covering every aspect of warfare in the Ancient Greek world from the beginnings of Greek civilization through to its assimilation into the ever expanding world of Rome. Begins in Crete around 2000BC, then flowering of Classical Greek civilization, as told through detailed narratives of the Greek and Persian Wars, Peloponnesian Wars, and the rise of Thebes as a major power. Then Macedonian domination under Philip II and his son Alexander the Great, various Wars of the Successors, the rise of the Bactrian-Greek and Indo-Greek kingdoms, the various wars between the Antigonid Macedonian, Seleucid and Ptolemaic kingdoms, and later the onset of the clash of cultures between the rising power of Rome in the west and the Hellenistic kingdoms. In the long run, the latter proved unable to match Rome's insatiable desire for conquest in the eastern Mediterranean, and this together with the rise of Parthia in the east ensured that one by one the Hellenistic kingdoms and states fell. The book ends with the destruction of Corinth in 146 BC after the defeat by Rome of the Achaean League. The conclusion considers the legacy of the Ancients Greeks in the Roman world. $40.00 USD

The Onin War 1467-77: A Turning Point in Samurai History

The Onin War 1467-77: A Turning Point in Samurai History. Draws on previously untranslated primary sources to set the famous yet misunderstood 15th Century Onin War in its true context. Begins with the glory days of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who made the position of shogun into something that was admired and respected, and left a legacy symbolized by his famous Golden Pavilion. Includes 63 black-and-white illustrations, 13 color plates, and four maps. Within decades all that he had achieved seemed to have been lost. In 1441, the reigning shogun Yoshinori, Yoshimitsu's son, had been murdered by a jealous rival. The Bakufu (shogunate) had somehow survived but Yoshinori was succeeded first by a son who never reached manhood and then by another young son called Yoshimasa. He was to reign for 49 years in a turbulent age. Not only did Yoshimasa have to face up to his background of family tragedy; unprecedented waves of rioting by farmers shook the ruling classes as much as any wars could have done, and all this happened to a background of famines, droughts and floods that killed more people than any of the battles ever did. Yoshimasa had several armed conflicts to contend with, which culminated in a succession dispute over his own choice of heir. This launched the Onin War. $35.00 USD

The Battle of Quiberon Bay, 1759: Britain's Other Trafalgar. Battle of Quiberon Bay (20 November 1759), was as significant as Nelson's victory in 1805, said Alfred Thayer Mahan, calling it the Trafalgar of this war, the Seven Years War. Arguably, it was even more vital. Britain in 1759 was much less well-defended, with virtually no regular troops at home, and the threat of French invasion was both more realistic and more imminent. When the British fleet under Admiral Hawke fell upon them, the French ships of the line under Admiral Conflans were actually on their way to rendezvous with the invasion troopships gathered at the mouth of the Loire. Includes eight pages of plates and seven maps. $30.00 USD

Massena at Bay 1811: The Lines of Torres Vedras to Funtes de Onoro. The 1810 French invasion of Portugal, commanded by the veteran marshal Andre Massena, was halted at the Lines of Torres Vedras. Starting with Wellington's occupation of the Lines of Torres Vedras, the book covers Wellington's pursuit of Massena back to Spain. This was a time when the Peninsular Army was still being forged and Wellington was refining his own art of war. In addition, 1810-1811 was a period when the outcome of the struggle in Iberia was still far from certain, and Wellington could not maneuver with the same confidence in the outcome as he could in future years. The series of combats fought at Pombal, Redhina, Foz da Arounce and Sabugal while Massena was at bay, though not categorised as general actions, were of the same scale and significance as those of 1808; Rolica and Vimiero. The general action at Funtes de Onoro was one of the most significant of Wellington's victories, but he confessed that if Bony had been here we would have been beat. $43.00 USD

Up to Mametz and Beyond. The 1931 book Up to Mametz tells the story of the creation of the battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers, its training, its apprenticeship in the trenches, and through to its ordeal of Mametz Wood on the Somme as part of 38 Division. It ends there. This new book, based on Wyn Griffith's unpublished diaries and letters, carries the unit through to the end of WWI. With careful editing and annotation, the events of these missing years are now available alongside the original work. They tell of an officer's life on the derided staff and provide fascinating glimpses of senior officers, some who attract high praise and others who the author obviously despised. $30.00 USD

The Wolf's Lair: Hitler's Headquarters on the Eastern Front – An Illustrated Guide. With the aid of color photographs, this guide shows the Wolfsschanze as it appears today with each building and its purpose identified. Colonel von Stauffenberg almost killed Hitler in the summer of 1944 – that building is still there, its roof sitting on its collapsed walls. Laced with numerous personal accounts of the installation and of Hitler's routines, and supplemented with contemporary images, the Wolfsschanze is brought to life once more. Other WWII complexes on the Eastern Front are profiled. Once Hitler has established his command centre at the Wolfsschanze, in effect the home of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (or military high command), the other branches of the German armed forces and civil authorities quickly followed suit. Just a few miles away, for example, the German Army built its own operational headquarters at Mauerwald – a complex which amounted to an even greater concentration of buildings, many of which remain intact and open to the public. Goring duly ordered that the Luftwaffe's headquarters, code-named Robinson, be built further out near the current Russian border, whilst Himmler's SS headquarters at Hochwald and that for Hans Lammers' Reich Chancellery were situated back nearer the Wolfsschanze. $35.00 USD
