THE THIRD MACEDONIAN WAR AND BATTLE OF PYDNA: Perseus' Neglect of Combined-Arms Tactics and the Real Reasons for the Roman Victory

THE THIRD MACEDONIAN WAR AND BATTLE OF PYDNA: Perseus' Neglect of Combined-Arms Tactics and the Real Reasons for the Roman Victory

Analysis of the war between the Romans and Macedonia with a focus on Perseus' military decisions and his battlefield strategies. Confirms the prevailing view of the sources that Perseus was too hesitant and non-committal in his early conduct of the war. More significantly, it argues that Perseus mishandled the Macedonian army when it comes to combined-arms tactics by adopting a defensive posture, particularly at the final battle of Pydna. Most importantly, though, Perseus refused to spend money to hire 10,000 Gallic horsemen, and the lack of cavalry cost him the initiative and the victory. Includes 16 black-and-white illustrations. $35.00 USD

TANGIER: The Earliest Battle Honour

TANGIER: The Earliest Battle Honour

In 1661, Portugal ceded Tangier to Charles II as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry settlement. Thus started the adventure known as 'English Tangier' whereby the Stuart monarch spent a king's ransom defending a city perched precariously on the North African coast surrounded by hostile powers. This narrative history of the characters that comprised English Tangier highlights the greed, ambition and religious fervor which drove the political maneuverings, ignited the emotions, and produced acts of extreme heroism in the struggle to impose British rule on an alien culture. Covers the actions of the Tangier Regiment and other regiments and the earliest battle honor: 'Tangier.' Examines decisions made by Charles II and his brother the Duke of York (soon to be James II), the qaids and sultans of Morocco, the Spanish Duke of Medina, Samuel Pepys and the successive governors of Tangier. Contains 50 mono illustrations. $50.00 USD

THE RUSSIAN PATRIOTIC WAR OF 1812 VOLUME 1: The Russian Official History

THE RUSSIAN PATRIOTIC WAR OF 1812 VOLUME 1: The Russian Official History

The Russian Patriotic War of 1812 is the only publicly available translation into English of Bogdanovich's official history of the Russian forces' involvement in the fight against Napoleon and his allies in Russia in 1812. This translation also includes extracts from Ivan Liprandi's critique of Bogdanovich's work. Examines the causes of the war and an account of the operational planning by Russian forces for their retreat from the borders into the Empire, dispelling the myth of the non-existence of any premeditated plan. The logistics of the forces on both sides are examined, along with highly detailed descriptions of the operations from Russia's western borders to beyond Smolensk, as well as operations on the northern and southern flanks. The composition of the forces are shown as clearly as possible, as are force numbers, casualties on each side, and so on. The maps attached to this work were drafted in such a way that they might serve to explain entire phases of the war. The battle plans show the locations of dominant terrain according to detailed state surveys, while villages, forests and roads have been copied from previously published plans. Contains 15 maps. $60.00 USD

DECISIVE VICTORY: The Battle of the Sambre, 4 November 1918

DECISIVE VICTORY: The Battle of the Sambre, 4 November 1918

Analyzes the Battle of the Sambre, 4 November 1918, at the operational and tactical levels: the BEF was no longer striving for a breakthrough – sequential 'bite and hold' was now the accepted method of advance. Thirteen divisions of the BEF led the assault on a frontage of approximately 20 miles, supported by over 1,000 guns, with initial plans presuming an involvement of up to 70 tanks and armored cars. The German Army was determined to hold a defensive line incorporating the Mormal Forest and the Sambre-Oise Canal, hoping to buy time for a strategic withdrawal to yet incomplete defensive positions between Antwerp and the Meuse, and thereby negotiate a compromise peace in the spring of 1919.

Examines the battle in its wider strategic context and reaches important, new conclusions: that this victory, hard-won as it was by a British army hampered by logistical, geographical and meteorological constraints, and worn down by the almost continuous hard fighting of the summer and autumn, irrevocably and finally crushed the will of the German defenders, leading to a pursuit of a demoralized, broken and beaten army, whose means of continued resistance had been destroyed thus expediting the armistice. Contains 35 black-and-white photos, 23 maps (6 sketch & 17 color), 4 diagrams, 1 black-and-white painting, and 4 tables. $60.00 USD

OPERATION SHEEPSKIN: British Military Intervention in Anguilla, 1969

OPERATION SHEEPSKIN: British Military Intervention in Anguilla, 1969

Military and political reappraisal of the Anguilla Crisis, exploring the countdown to military intervention, its tactical implementation, and its legacy. Evaluates the reasons for the British government's apparent overreaction to the crisis with March 19, 1969, deployment of Britain's 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) and Royal Marines. Their objective, under Operation Sheepskin, was to invade the small Caribbean island of Anguilla through both an amphibious and airborne assault. The operation aimed to crush a two-year island rebellion against the post-colonial government of Robert Bradshaw on St Kitts.

Strangely enough, as the troops splashed ashore, they were met by the thunderous silence of an empty beach, apart from the clicks of journalists' cameras. To the surprise of all involved, the occupation of the island was subsequently achieved without bloodshed. Whilst British policymakers soon questioned whether they had misread the situation in Anguilla and overreacted militarily, Fleet Street and the international media responded with ridicule. Contains 53 black-and-white photos, 6 color profiles, 3 color illustrations, and 1 color map. $30.00 USD
