The Battle of Sekigahara: The Greatest, Bloodiest, Most Decisive Samurai Battle Ever

The Battle of Sekigahara: The Greatest, Bloodiest, Most Decisive Samurai Battle Ever. Sekigahara was the greatest samurai battle in history. After Hideyoshi's death in 1598, a power struggle emerged between those loyal to the Toyotomi, and those who supported the second most powerful warlord, Tokugawa Ieyasu. With Hideyoshi gone, Ieyasu made moves that brought the ire of a number of his contemporaries, and soon the entire country was divided into two great armies, East and West. Leading the loyalist cause was Ishida Mitsunari, who gathered a force of around 130,000 samurai, while the Tokugawa commanded just 80,000. Reveals the developments in Japan that led up to the outbreak of war, the characters involved, how the battle itself unfolded, and the aftermath. The weapons and armor of the time are also fully explained, along with little known customs of the samurai and their warfare. $43.00 USD

Constantius III: Rome's Lost Hope

Constantius III: Rome's Lost Hope Bio of Constantius III, who was appointed Magister Militum (Master of Troops) to Honorius, the young Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, in or around 410. His predecessor, Stilicho, had been murdered by his own troops, and much of Gaul and Hispania had been overrun by barbarians or usurpers. One by one, Constantius eliminated the usurpers and defeated or came to terms with the various invading groups. Most notoriously, he allowed the Visigoths to settle in Gaul in return for their help in defeating the Vandals and Alans who had seized parts of Hispania, a decision with far-reaching consequences. Constantius married Honorius' sister and was eventually proclaimed his co-emperor. However, the Eastern Roman Emperor, Honorius' nephew, refused to accept his appointment. $35.00 USD

Wellington and the Vitoria Campaign 1813: Never a Finer Army

Wellington and the Vitoria Campaign 1813: Never a Finer Army. Describes the Peninsular war leading up to the 1813 Battle of Vitoria, where Wellington and his army of British, Portuguese and Spanish defeated the French. The loss was fatal to French interests in Spain, but it is also significant because it demonstrated Wellington's confidence in his allied army and in himself. The complexity of the maneuvers he expected his men to carry out and the shrewd strategic planning that preceded the battle were quite remarkable. $50.00 USD

Bar Kokhba: The Jew Who Defied Hadrian and Challenged the Might of Rome. Covers the Second Jewish War, where the highly motivated Jewish militia tested the highly trained Roman army from AD 132 – 136. They established an independent nation with its own administration, headed by Shim'on as its president – otherwise known as Bar Kokhba. Contains 45 color plates, 46 black and white illustrations, and 5 black-and-white maps. $35.00 USD

The Charge of the Heavy Brigade: Scarlett's 300 in the Crimea. Everyone has heard of the charge of the Light Brigade, a suicidal cavalry attack caused by confused orders which somehow sums up the Crimean War (1854-6). Far less well known is what happened an hour earlier, when General Scarlett's Heavy Brigade charged a Russian army at least three times its size. That proved a brilliant success, whereas the Light Brigade's action resulted in huge casualties and achieved nothing. $43.00 USD

The Aftermath of Dunkirk: Images of War Series. Operation Dynamo rescued 338,226 British and Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk aboard a total of 861 vessels, of which 243 were sunk. For those left behind, official figures record that up to 80,000 French and British troops were captured, whilst during the time of the actual evacuation, somewhere in the region of 16,000 French and 1,000 British soldiers were killed. Includes 180 black-and-white photographs. $27.00 USD

Waffen-SS Armor on the Eastern Front: Images of War Series. Documents the key role played by Waffen-SS panzer units during Operation Barbarossa. After early victories such as the recapture of Kharkov in early 1943 and the Kursk offensive, commanders and crews of armored vehicles such as Pz.Kpfw.I, II, III, IV, Panther, Tiger, King Tiger, and assault and self-propelled guns had to adapt their tactics and equipment to what became a desperate defensive withdrawal eventually back across a scarred and devastated Eastern Front. Even during the last months of the war as the Panzers withdrew through Poland and into the Reich, these exhausted elite units, broken down into small battle groups or Kampfgruppen, fought to the bitter end. 250 black-and-white illustrations. $27.00 USD

Eben-Emael and the Defence of Fortress Belgium 1940. Covers the defenders of Fort Eben-Emael, considered to be Belgium's most powerful fortress in 1940. This huge structure, with its powerful artillery and infantry weapons, was the key to the Meuse and Albert Canal defenses. In the darkness of the pre-dawn, German DFS 230 gliders drifted silently over the southern Netherlands, landing one by one on top of Eben-Emael. Within minutes, German Special Forces troops destroyed most of the fort's weapons and observation capabilities. The following day, the garrison surrendered, and the door to Belgium and France was open. Eben-Emael was only one of the 19 forts of the fortified positions of Liege and Namur attacked in May 1940. Three new and 16 refurbished forts held out for several days, and often fought to the death. The story he tells contradicts the common assumption that these static defenses were rolled over or bypassed. $43.00 USD

The Royal Navy in Eastern Waters: Linchpin of Victory 1935-1942. Examines how the Royal Navy secured the strategic waters from Egypt in the west to Australasia in the East through the first half of WWII. Explains why this contribution made while Russia's fate remained in the balance and before American economic power took effect was so critical. Discusses grand strategy, intelligence, accounts of specific operations, and technical assessment of ships and weapons. It challenges established perceptions of Royal Navy capability, as the Royal Navy of 1939 was stronger than usually suggested. Encompasses the key part played by the American relationship in Britain's eastern naval strategy. $30.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $25.50 USD.

Warfare in the Far East: 1944 Tactics. This tactical pamphlet covers jungle warfare in 1944. By this time, the British Army had come to terms with the Japanese enemy and his fighting methods and had worked out tactical responses to actions in the field. The pamphlet is particularly valuable because it contains a number of scenarios in jungle fighting. Illustrated with color maps, it is a very good introduction to jungle warfare. $28.00 USD
