The Battle of the Nile – August 1, 1798
Napoleon's Egyptian campaign was supported by Admiral Brueys' fleet of 13 Ships of the Line, and had led Admiral Nelson on a merry chase across the length and breadth of the Mediterranean. After landing Napoleon and troops ashore at Alexandria, Brueys, fearing the British fleet, wished to return to safer waters – but Napoleon ordered him to stay in-theater. Brueys sailed his fleet to Abukir Bay, 23 miles to the east, to form a safe haven for his fleet. This haven turned into a trap as the wily Nelson turned Brueys' position against him and attacked with 14 Line of Battleships late in the afternoon of August 1st, with action continuing into the night. By dawn, the fate of the Egyptian campaign had been decided.
