Casemate Publishers writes:

Here Are This Week's New Releases!

Casemate's Capital of Spies is an illustrated account of the various intelligence services which operated in Cold War Berlin.

From Pen and Sword, The Greek Hoplite Phalanx explores various perspectives on one of the classical world's most iconic fighting formations.

Harpia Publishing's Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles profiles both the UCAVs currently operating in active military service and those under development.

Capital of Spies

Capital of Spies – Intelligence Agencies in Berlin During the Cold War – Sven Felix Kellerhoff, Bernd von Kostka

For almost half a century, the hottest front in the Cold War was right across Berlin. From summer 1945 until 1990, the secret services of NATO and the Warsaw Pact fought an ongoing duel in the dark. Throughout the Cold War, espionage was part of everyday life in both East and West Berlin, with German spies playing a crucial part of operations on both sides. The construction of the wall in 1961 changed the political situation and the environment for espionage – the invisible front was now concreted and unmistakable.

Journalist Sven Felix Kellerhoff and historian Bernd von Kostka describe the spectacular successes and failures of the various secret services based in the city.

The Greek Hoplite Phalanx

The Greek Hoplite Phalanx – The Iconic Heavy Infantry of the Classical Greek World – Richard Taylor

The Greek hoplite and the phalanx formation have been the subject of considerable academic debate over the past century. Dr. Richard Taylor provides an overview of the current state of play in the hoplite debate in all its aspects, from fighting techniques to the social and economic background of the hoplite revolution, in a form that is accessible for the general reader and military history enthusiast. But the book goes further: offering a new perspective on the hoplite phalanx by putting it in the context of other military developments in the Mediterranean world.

Taylor argues that the Greek phalanx was different in degree but not in kind from other contemporary heavy infantry formations and that the hoplite debate, with its insistence on the unique nature of the hoplite phalanx, has obscured the similarities with other equivalent formations. The result is a fresh take on a perennially popular subject.

Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles

Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles: Current Types, Ordnance and Operations – Dan Gettinger

The field of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) is rapidly diversifying as an array of light, midsized, and heavy UCAVs and munitions enter the global marketplace. The influence of UCAVs on the conduct of war has already been felt in conflicts in the Caucasus, the Middle East and North Africa, where state and non-state actors have fielded a dizzying number of UCAVs from around the world. Advanced militaries are beginning to equip UCAVs with increasingly sophisticated munitions.

The first in a new series of Strategic Handbooks from Harpia Publishing presents an essential guide to the world of armed unmanned aircraft. It features profiles of every UCAV currently in active military service or under development, as well as other unmanned aerial vehicles that could potentially be armed in the future.
