First Strike of The Slovakian Fist
July 22, 1941
Lipovets, U.S.S.R.

Scenario

Four days after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Slovakian forces moved forward to support their ally in this new campaign. The Slovakian Expeditionary Army Group was formed, and moved to support German Army Group South.

Soon, however, it was realized that the German forces were leaving their allies behind. To rectify this embarrassing issue, the Slovakian command formed the Slovak Mobile Brigade, also to be known as Brigade Pilfousek, after its commander, Colonel Pilfousek. This brigade was made up of the mobile assets of the Slovakian Expeditionary Group, and could keep up with the German forces.

Brigade Pilfousek advance through Lvov, passed through Vinnitsa, and continued its drive now as part of German 17th Armee. On the 22nd of July, orders were received for the Mobile Brigade to push forward and take the town of Lipovets. This would give Axis forces additional crossing points over the Sob River and continue the hard push against scattered Soviet forces. Unfortunately for the Slovakians, the Soviet 44th Rifle Division was defending the area and in no mood to fall back. After fierce fighting, advanced elements of the Slovakian Mobile Brigade made it to Lipovets, and had started house-to-house fighting just as Soviet forces split the Brigade in two by a southern flank attack.

Surprised and desperate to break through the Soviet forces, Colonel Pilfousek called upon nearby elements of the German 97th Jager Division to lend support. The race to save the surrounded Slovakians was on.

Scenario

We have uploaded this free scenario to our Free Scenarios folder on our Yahoo! Group for everyone to download for free. Although designed for Panzer Korps divisional WWII rules, it can be used as a campaign or a framework for smaller company- or squad-level games.

Also available is Udarna Legija: Croatian & Slovakian General's Handbook. It breaks down the organization and the history of the Croatian and Slovakian forces in Axis service. This is available now at any of our retailers, or directly from our website.
