269 European Ironclads 1860-75: The Gloire Sparks the Great Ironclad Arms Race cover

269 European Ironclads 1860-75: The Gloire Sparks the Great Ironclad Arms Race. New Vanguard series. When the Gloire slid down the Toulon slipway in 1859, it changed seapower forever. With this ship, the world's first oceangoing ironclad, France had a warship that could sink any other, and which was proof against the guns of any wooden ship afloat. Instantly, an arms race began between the great navies of Europe – first to build their own ironclads, and then to surpass each other's technology and designs. As both armor and gun technology rapidly improved, naval architects found new ways to mount and protect guns. The ram briefly came back into fashion, and Italian and Austro-Hungarian fleets fought the ironclad era's great battle at Lissa. By the end of this revolutionary period, the modern battleship was becoming recognizable, and new naval powers were emerging to dominate Europe's waters. Available late April. $19.00 USD

General Sir Ralph Abercromby and the French Revolutionary Wars: 1792-1801 Bio throws new light onto Britain's position during the late 18th Century, focusing on its military affairs and the expeditionary forces led by Abercromby during the conflict. As tension between Britain and France grew after the convulsions of the French Revolution, the British decided to wage an economic war by attacking French colonial possessions, and money and men were sent to campaign on the continent. Abercromby was the most notable British general to exercise command of these expeditions, and his actions and experiences are central to the narrative. He led British forces during the disastrous campaign in Flanders, achieved some success in St. Lucia and Trinidad, failed at Den Helder, and finally triumphed in Egypt where he lost his life in 1801. $50.00 USD

War Without Pity: In the South Indian Peninsula 1798-1813: The Letter Book of Lieutenant-Colonel Valentine Blacker cover

War Without Pity: In the South Indian Peninsula 1798-1813: The Letter Book of Lieutenant-Colonel Valentine Blacker Blacker's active service as a young cavalry officer in Southern India covered several wars and rebellions. He was wounded, suffered disease and the loss of many friends. From the day of his arrival, for the next 15 years, he wrote regularly to his father until the latter's death in 1813. The letters to some extent expose the truth of how the British held India. Rebellion was ruthlessly crushed, wounded executed on the battlefield, and if besieged garrisons failed to surrender, after a successful storm, they were put to the sword. The correspondence ceases in 1813, but Valentine's career progressed until the end of the 3rd Maratha and Pindari War of 1817-1819, when he was the the Quartermaster General of the Madras Army, and wrote A Memoir of the Operations of the British Army in India. In 1823, he was promoted to Lieut. Col. and appointed Surveyor General of India at Calcutta, where he died in 1826. $50.00 USD

Historical Wargames…

Zeppelin Raider: Imperial German Naval Airships – Wargame cover

Zeppelin Raider: Imperial German Naval Airships – Wargame Players will find it challenging to survive an entire tour from 1914 to 1918, at which time, if still alive, you will surrender at base, having done your part on the front lines. If desired, a player may start with a more advanced model of Zeppelin which may actually increase their chances to survive. You may start at any month/year you wish, but notice that some Zeppelins are available right away, but others are not available until later. Players may be reassigned to a newer model of Zeppelin under some circumstances, but typically will stay in the same airship until the end of game or until shot down in flames, sunk, or wrecked in a crash landing.

The object of the game is to conduct numerous missions which include two main types: bombing missions are required to bomb a specific geographic location in England (London, for example), whereas scouting missions are required to scout a specific location in the North Sea. Players are not limited by the mission parameters for success, as you may choose to bomb or successfully scout somewhere else. The success of each mission can result in promotion and crew advancement. Just as in the real war, the game system involves a great deal of chance (as was the case historically), but ultimate success rests on the decisions you make during your career. $79.00 USD
