The Life of a General in Napoleon's Light Cavalry: The Memoirs of Jean-Nicolas Curely

The Life of a General in Napoleon's Light Cavalry: The Memoirs of Jean-Nicolas Curely

English translation of the memoir of Jean-Nicolas Curely. Born in 1774, son of a laborer, Curely rose through the ranks to become a General in Napoleon's Light Cavalry. He was a hussar at 19 years old, second lieutenant at 32, squadron commander at 35, Colonel at 38 and General at 40. He became Cavalier of the Legion d'Honneur in 1806, and was wounded five times in his career. His memoir reflects the role of the light cavalry; scouting ahead of the army, conducting reconnaissance to the flanks and launching raids. He took part in all Napoleon's great campaigns, including Austerlitz, Heilsberg, Essling, Raab, Wagram, Moscow, Beresina, Wachau, Leipzig, Craonne, and Laon, and served as an aide de camp to many of the French army's most famous light cavalry generals. $40.00 USD

The Battle Against the Luddites: Unrest in the Industrial Revolution During the Napoleonic Wars

The Battle Against the Luddites: Unrest in the Industrial Revolution During the Napoleonic Wars

Uncovers the origins of Luddism and their allies in the middle classes. Taking their name from Ned Ludd, who had smashed up knitting frames in Nottingham, the Luddites saw the emergence of mechanization as a threat to their livelihood, with machines replacing men. In response, they took matters into their own hands by wrecking the new equipment. The Napoleonic Wars marked the end of centuries old way of life in agriculture, textile production and the wider economy. The dramatic changes in Britain between 1790 and 1815 created a unique set of social grievances by those left behind by the unprecedented changes. Months of violence swept across the West Midlands, Lancashire and Yorkshire which saw one factory boss murdered; other factory owners began shooting protesting workers. The disturbances resulted in the mobilizing of thousands of regular soldiers – at one time there were as many British soldiers fighting the Luddites than there were fighting Napoleon on the Iberian Peninsula. With present day concerns over computerization replacing labor, this is a story that echoes down the centuries. $50.00 USD

Stay and Fight It Out: The Second Day at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, Culp's Hill and the North End of the Battlefield

Stay & Fight It Out: The Second Day at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, Culp's Hill & the North End of the Battlefield

Continues the Battle of Gettysburg from the first two books in the series (Fight Like the Devil: The First Day at Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, and, Stay and Fight It Out: The Second Day at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863) recounts the often-overlooked fight at Culp's Hill that secured the Union position in the fishhook and set the stage for the battle's fateful final day. July 2 saw a massive Confederate attack against the southernmost part of the line. As the Southern juggernaut rolled inexorably northward, Federal troops shifted away from Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill to meet the threat. Just then, part of the Army of Northern Virginia's vaunted Second Corps launched itself at the weakened Federal right. The very men who had broken the Union army the day before resolved to break it once again. The ensuing struggle-every bit as desperate and with stakes every bit as high as the more famous fight at Little Round Top on the far end of the line-imperiled the entire Union position. Stay and Fight It Out, one Union general counseled his peers. $17.00 USD

The Shadow of Isandlwana: The Life and Times of General Lord Chelmsford and his Disaster in Zululand

The Shadow of Isandlwana: The Life & Times of General Lord Chelmsford & His Disaster in Zululand

Biography explores the personal character and military career of British General Lord Chelmsford, who served in the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and the Abyssinian Expedition, before commanding the British invasion of the Zulu Kingdom in South Africa. In January 1879, disaster struck when Chelmsford divided his forces at Isandlwana in the face of the enemy and the Zulu overwhelmed his camp, killing more than 1,300 of its defenders. Such a defeat was almost unprecedented in a Victorian colonial campaign. Despite Chelmsford's later victories at Gingindlovu and Ulundi, he was humiliatingly relieved of his command. His responsibility for Isandlwana dogged him for the rest of his days, and he would forever be associated with this historic defeat. $50.00 USD

SS Panzer Battalion 501: Tigers in the Ardennes

SS Panzer Battalion 501: Tigers in the Ardennes

Examines Tiger tank battalion N501 (schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 501) in the Battle of the Bulge with a summary of their actions, unit history, and a tank-by-tank analysis of the causes of destruction. In total, the authors found 16 different examples, and the machines lost one-by-one in the Ardennes make it possible to follow the unit's course throughout the conflict. Although the unit had exceptional crews, including some of the most emblematic aces of the Panzerwaffe, and benefited from the element of surprise, it suffered a bitter failure in the Ardennes. How could a vehicle considered to be among the most powerful of the conflict suffer almost 100 percent losses? In hindsight, can we speak of a tactical failure? $35.00 USD

Dieppe 1942: Operation Jubilee – A Learning Curve

Dieppe 1942: Operation Jubilee – A Learning Curve

On 19 August 1942, an Allied amphibious raid took place on the coastal town of Dieppe in northern France. The official reason for the raid was to capture the town's port, gather relevant intelligence, and destroy a number of coastal defenses, port structures and other identified buildings. Allied authorities believed the raid would not only provide a much-needed boost to Allied morale, but also demonstrate to Stalin that Britain and the United States were serious in their commitment to opening a second front, in order to help the Soviet army fighting on the Eastern Front. It has also been suggested that the real reason for the raid was to capture a new German 4-rotor Enigma code machine, along with related code books. $43.00 USD
