LIBERTADORS: Wargaming the Wars of Liberation in South America

LIBERTADORS: Wargaming the Wars of Liberation in South America

Rules for an era that offers a chance to collect a small force of brightly-uniformed troops who are fun and simple to paint, with plenty of cavalry and chances for heroics. Written to emphasize the mighty deeds of the figures who loom largest on both sides. Officers are the key not only to command and control but often also to victory in melee; but if they fall in battle, they can no longer issue orders, and so the cycle of players' decisions continues. The game is designed for battles featuring somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 combatants – around 10 to 30 bases per side. Includes army lists and suggestions for figures. Large format, full-color paperback. $50.00 USD

THE MILITARY ORGANIZATION OF MOLDAVIA AND WALLACHIA IN THE PHANARIOT ERA, 1709-1821

THE MILITARY ORGANIZATION OF MOLDAVIA AND WALLACHIA IN THE PHANARIOT ERA, 1709-1821

Drawing on a careful re-examination of archival material, administrative records, and contemporary accounts, demonstrates how the armies of Moldavia and Wallachia were reshaped – reduced in size during peacetime, often for fiscal reasons, they continued to function as instruments of border defense, internal order, and tax enforcement. Set against the complex political backdrop of Ottoman suzerainty, Russian expansion, and Habsburg pressure, explores how military institutions adapted to a changing geopolitical environment. Traces the evolution of command structures, recruitment systems, fiscal mechanisms, and the social composition of the armed forces across more than a century of Phanariot governance. Contains 43 black-and-white illustrations, 8 color plates, and 37 black-and-white tables. $45.00 USD

WITH WELLINGTON'S CAVALRY: The Letters and Journals of the Luard and Dalbiac brothers during the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns

Details how the 4th Dragoons were present at virtually every battle in the Peninsular War from 1809 to 1814, and how it was a family regiment – some family members serving at the same time, and they left journals and letters that describe the life of a cavalry regiment in the Peninsular. John Luard was also an accomplished artist, and he produced numerous sketches of the places they visited as they traveled, the people they met, and the battles they fought. These are all included, providing a vivid image of life in a cavalry regiment. Contains 86 black-and-white illustrations, 19 color illustrations, 10 pages of color plates, and 3 tables. $60.00 USD

STONEWALL JACKSON'S WINTER OPERATIONS: The Raids Against the C&O Canal and the Bath-Romney Campaign, December 1861 to February 1862

STONEWALL JACKSON'S WINTER OPERATIONS: The Raids Against the C&O Canal and the Bath-Romney Campaign, December 1861 to February 1862

Examines Stonewall Jackson's early, flawed winter campaigns, revealing his miscalculations and persistent, understudied operations. When viewed apart from the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, these earlier military activities reveal a starkly different portrait of the enigmatic general. Instead of lightning-quick maneuvers and tactical victories, depicts a fallible Jackson who encountered significant difficulties, made mistakes and miscalculations, and led a series of unsuccessful operations. Seeks to fundamentally reshape perceptions of the famed Confederate general to present a more accurate historical portrait of the man and his military career. An in-depth account of the 1943 Dodecanese campaign and Britain's final decisive defeat in the Aegean. By 1975, the government forces, with the help of British and Iranian troops, defeated the insurgents, securing the region and stabilizing Sultan Qaboos's rule.
