The 1864 Second Schleswig War was a brief but decisive conflict where Prussia and Austria defeated Denmark, forcing it to cede the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg. Triggered by Denmark's attempt to integrate Schleswig via the 1863 Novem ber Constitution, the war resulted in a massive territorial loss of one-third of Denmark's territory. The conflict arose from disputes over the sovereignty of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, with Denmark violating the London Protocol by attempting to integrate Schleswig into the Danish kingdom.
The key battles in the war demonstrated the superior, modernized Prussian and Austrian forces, overwhelmed the Danish army, forcing them to abandon the Dannevirke defenses. The decisive battle was the siege of Dybbøl (April 1864). The outcome of the war was the Treaty of Vienna, forcing Denmark to surrender the territories to Prussia and Austria.
