The Forty Sieges of Constantinople: The Great City's Enemies and Its Survival

The Forty Sieges of Constantinople: The Great City's Enemies and Its Survival. The great city of Byzantium / Constantinople / Istanbul stands on a commanding cape overlooking a busy waterway. It has been the target of repeated attempts to capture it for the past two and a half millennia. Most of these attacks failed, but some did so in spectacular fashion, such as the great Arab sieges. The inhabitants fought hard in almost every siege, with the result that when the city was captured it was also destroyed, or at least suffered a hideous sack. Almost every nation between the Atlantic and the Steppes of Asia have made attempts to capture the city, some repeatedly but only a few – a Roman emperor, the Crusaders, the Turks – have succeeded. And there is no sign that some have given up the hope of taking it – the last sieges were just before and then during the Great War, by the Bulgars, and then by the Allies, who got no closer than Gallipoli, but the city had to submit to enemy occupation when the empire it ruled collapsed. $43.00 USD

The Changing Face of Old Regime Warfare: Essays in Honour of Christopher Duffy

The Changing Face of Old Regime Warfare: Essays in Honour of Christopher Duffy. To honor Prof Christopher Duffy, the book collects 16 essays by scholars covering cavalry tactics, divisional organization, the rise of light forces, and the effects of war-making on society. Although centered on 18th-Century warfare, this book also includes chapters which address the Napoleonic conflicts and First World War.

The first section, Backgrounds and Retrospectives, explores the state of historical writing on 18th-Century warfare, as well as Professor Duffy's contribution to it. The second section, Commanders and their Armies, explores the field of traditional military history. It provides coverage of tactical analyses, campaign narratives, and organizational and doctrinal changes for the armies fighting in the Old Regime. The third section, Voices from the Past, provides translations and analyses of military sources which have been previously unavailable to the public. The fourth and final section, New Perspectives, demonstrates the varied picture which methods such as archaeology, cultural history, and colonial history tell us about the imperial history of European states at war. $65.00 USD

The Viking Saint: Olaf II of Norway. Norway's King Olaf II Haraldsson (c. 995-1030) started out with traditional Viking toughness on raids, but eventually changed his overriding mission to Christianize Norway and extirpate heathenism. He took the Norwegian throne in 1015, when he had barely reached his twenties. For the next 15 years, he labored against immense odds to subdue the rebellious heathen nobles of Norway while fending off Swedish hostility. Both finally combined against Olaf in 1030, when he fell in battle not far from Trondheim, still only in his mid-thirties. After his body was believed to possess healing powers, and reports of them spread from Scandinavia to Spain and Byzantium, Olaf II was canonized a saint 134 years later. He remains Norway's patron saint, as well as a legendary warrior. $33.00 USD

Fixer and Fighter: The Life of Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, 1170 – 1243. Hubert de Burgh rose from obscure beginnings to become one of the most powerful men in England. He loyally served first King John. After John's death, he held Chinon castle in France for the new king, 9-year old Henry, against a renewed siege. In August 1217, he struck the final blow against the French invasion, when he defeated a powerful fleet carrying French reinforcements at the naval Battle of Sandwich. Hubert successfully held Dover Castle for the king against a siege led by the French Prince Louis. Hubert continued to serve Henry III, making important reforms as Justiciar of England and leading military campaigns against the Welsh Prince Lewellyn. He eventually lost favor due to the machinations of his rivals and narrowly avoided execution but was eventually reconciled with his king and able to die a peaceful death. $30.00 USD

The Soviet Army's High Commands in War and Peace: 1941-1992. The vast distances of the Eastern Front forced the WWII Soviet political-military leadership to resort to new organizational expedients in order to control operations along the extended front. Five high commands, responsible for two or more fronts (army groups) and sometimes one or more fleets, were created along the northwestern, western, southwestern, and North Caucasus strategic directions during 1941-42. However, the highly unfavorable strategic situation during the first year of the war, as well as interference in day-to-day operations by Stalin, severely limited the high commands' effectiveness. As a consequence, the high commands were abolished in mid-1942 and replaced by the more flexible system of supreme command representatives at the front. A High Command of Soviet Forces in the Far East was established in 1945, and oversaw the Red Army's highly effective campaign against Japanese forces in Manchuria.

The Far Eastern High Command was briefly resurrected in 1947, as a response to the tense situation along the Korean peninsula and the ongoing civil war in China, but was abolished in 1953, soon after Stalin's death. Growing tensions with China brought about the recreation of the Far Eastern High Command in 1979, followed a few years later by the appearance of new high commands in Europe and South Asia. However, these new high commands did not long survive the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and were abolished a year later. The book relies almost exclusively on Soviet and post-communist archival and other sources and is the first unclassified treatment of this subject in any country, East or West. $45.00 USD
