The Devil's Pocket – Battle for Chessnovka – February 13th, 1944 – Cherkassy/Korsun Ukraine Region

Devil's Pocket

Some 40-50,000 German troops had been cut off and were attempting to fight their way out of what has become known as the Korsun (Cherkassy) Pocket. Several relief attempts were launched by outside German forces hoping to link up with those trapped. One such attempt was by theIII Panzer Korp, of which Schwere Panzer Regiment Bake was part. While initially successful, a combination of mud, ever-increasing Soviet strength, and dwindling supplies all played against this effort. Bake, one of Germany's most successful panzer commanders, reached the Gniloy Tisich River and was able to force a crossing and secure a small bridgehead. Hoping to drive further and protect his bridgehead, Bake consolidated his force and started an early morning drive towards the town of Chessnovka, with Khyzhyntsi as his objective. Soviet forces were arriving in the area, and had every intention to block all further relief efforts.
