Hoplite Research Games writes:

The summer is here in full swing, so let's get to gaming! This summer, the battle cry is "let's try those new rules, or how about simply getting more than one person in the room!" We have been stuck without our necessary dose of in-person gaming for far too long, and it does affect one's gaming sanity! The good news about all of this will be the focus and finishing up those projects that have been lurking in the closet for lack of time.

On the Drawing Board

We have been working on several new things and updating existing rules with the knowledge that the work is never done. We thank all of you who have played our rules systems and encourage you all to share them with others. We are working on an update to Eagle's Prey, our 19th Century North American campaign and rules system, as well as working on a new medieval warfare system. We have a few surprises planned for later this year that will encourage even more fun, so stay tuned.

The Napoleonic Rules Race

Is it just me, or is there this incessant need to release a new Napoleonic ruleset yearly? Just in the last few years, there have been quite a variety of new Napoleonic sets, all trying to get gamer's attention. There are other periods that also garner a bit of the spotlight, but nothing comes close to Napoleon's age. Besides the established rules systems out there such as Napoleon's Battles, Corps Command, Battles for Empire, General d'Brigade, Valmy to Waterloo, WRG, Shako, Corps D' Armee, Legacy of Glory, Vive l'Empereur, Carnage & Glory, Empire (1 through V Revolution & Empire) along with a few others, there is strong financial allure to getting a "new" ruleset out. Most recently, games like Black Power I & II, General d'Armee, Lasalle I & II, Chosen Men, Clash of Empires, Blucher, Ruse De Guerre, Shadow of the Eagles, and there are even more new ones just hitting the stands!

Of course, it's the lifetime search for the "perfect" system. As time marches on, there will continue to be new releases of "new" and "better" Napoleonic rules – or is it a method to simply give a history-starved gamer the need to buy something on Amazon. There really isn't a right or wrong answer to all of this, as we are all looking for something that matches to what we understand to be Napoleonic warfare, even though all of us have never been a soldier in a Napoleonic army on the field… unless you are over 230 years old. grin
