Spying From The Sky – At the Controls of U.S. Cold War Aerial Intelligence – Robert Richardson
This is the biography of pilot Col. William Gregory, whose astonishing career with the CIA and the U.S. Air Force encompassed the attempts by U.S. intelligence to understand Cold War Soviet Union.
William Gregory, "Greg" to all, was born into a sharecropper's life in the hills of north-central Tennessee. From the back of a mule-drawn plow, Greg learned the value of resilience and the importance of living a determined life. Refusing to accept a life of continued poverty, Greg sought and found a way out – a work-study college program that made it possible to leave farming behind him forever.
Following the war, Greg served with a B-29 unit, then transitioned to the new, red-hot B-47 strategic bomber. In his frequent deployments, he was always assigned the same target in the Soviet Union – Tblisi, Stalin's home town. While a B-47 pilot, Greg was selected to join America's first high-altitude program – the Black Knights. Flying RB-57D aircraft, Greg and his team flew peripheral "ferret" missions around the Soviet Union and its satellites, collecting critical order-of-battle data so desperately needed by the Air Force at that time. When that program neared its design end, and following the Gary Powers shoot-down over the Soviet Union, Greg was assigned to command of the CIA's U-2 unit at Edwards AFB. It was during that five-year command that Greg and his team provided critical overflight intelligence, including during the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam build-up. He found time to also become one of the first to fly U-2s off aircraft carriers in a demonstration project.

Up Against the Wall – The KGB & Latvia – Vincent Hunt
A hard-hitting history of the Soviet security police in totalitarian Latvia – with Latvians as both oppressors and oppressed. Through the stories of people held as prisoners, never told before in English, Up Against the Wall details the methods of a brutal totalitarian regime and the bloody twists and turns of Latvia's long and complicated relationship with the Soviet security police. This is not for the squeamish.
The author presents harrowing personal testimonies of those imprisoned, tortured and deported to Siberian gulags by the KGB, drawing from museum archives and interviews translated into English for this book, as well as from declassified CIA files, KGB records, and his own research in Latvia. He interviews human rights activists, partisans, KGB experts and those who led Latvia to independence in the 1990s, and explores the role of Latvian KGB double-agents in defeating anti-Soviet partisan groups and the West's Cold War spying missions.

Korean War – Imjin River – Fall of the Glosters to the Armistice, April 1951-July 1953 – Gerry Van Tonder
Shortly before midnight on 22 April 1951, to the west of the U.S. Eighth Army's defensive front, the Chinese 63rd Army fell on the British 29th Brigade. On the left flank, the 1st Battalion, Gloucester Regiment (Glosters), held a tenuous position at a ford on the Imjin River. Despite a gallant defense, the battalion was pushed back to make a desperate but futile stand on Hill 235. On what became known as Glosters' Hill, the battalion ceased to exist. It was subsequently estimated that the attacking force of 27,000 Chinese troops suffered 10,000 casualties, forcing the Chinese army to be withdrawn from the front.
From August 1951 to the summer of 1952, the U.S.A.F. conducted Operation Strangle in a futile and costly attempt to disrupt Chinese supply routes. In the last two years of fighting, Communist Chinese and U.N. forces faced each other from well-entrenched positions in hilly terrain, where mapped hill numbers were contested. From June 1952 to March 1953, a series of five hard-fought engagements took place in central Korea as the antagonists sought ownership of Hill 266, commonly referred to as Old Baldy. This was followed during April-July 1953 by two tactically pointless battles over Pork Chop Hill, in which the U.N. forces won the first battle and the Chinese the second, with both sides sustaining major casualties. On 27 July 1953, the two belligerents signed an armistice agreement, implementing a ceasefire that stands to this day. De facto, the Korean War has never ended.
