To continue my afterthoughts, those of you who haven't played these games should look for an opportunity to do so. They're simple, flavorful, thoughtful, and beautiful. You can get a lot of the rules from Columbia's site.

They have some of the flavor of old school miniatures games (roll a bunch of dice, sixes are hits, step reduction), but they're not tactical, they're strategic. They include some fog-of-war, often even in a way that makes sense.

A couple of the recent ones, Cursader Rex and Hammer of the Scots, which I have not played, have a lot of extra rues on top of the movement and combat system that brings in a lot of historical elements in a fun way. Even the very simple ones like Quebec 1759 have a lot of color in the form of Indian and Ranger units, etc. They are great war games.

And they're worth their high price, not only in play value, but in color-stickered wood blocks and some of my favorite maps in the hobby. Check Board Game Geek for pictures.
