UK Mark: Yes of course pikes were used a little in the WSS. I believe some Russian militia used them even in Napoleonic times and maybe even the Home Guard in Britain (Dad's Army) in WW2. But I think really that the GNW was the last systematic use, by choice rather than lack of some thing else.

I also think that you are right about Lee and I think he had the same idea in mind as the Swedes did. He couldn't afford firefights and wanted decisive shock action & the pikes were for this. I can't see it working myself though. Using pikes against slow firing and inaccurate muskets is one thing but against ACW technology I suspect it would have been suicidal. But who knows really and certainly I would guess Lee was better placed than I am to know if this was a good idea or not.

Also you are right it is a great period to game and should be gamed more - hopefully it will.

Peter Berry of Baccus 6mm writes:

The new release in the Polemos series will be released on Friday, 13th May, when Nick Dorrel's Great Northern War set will go on sale.

Polemos GNW Rules

The ECW version of Polemos has been very well received, and is proving to be very popular. I expect that these will do just as well, given that the Great Northern War is a very popular wargames period.

To mark the release of the rules, all of the GNW army packs have been reformatted to fit in with the Polemos basing system. Once again there is also a boxed starter set, packed full of all you need to start up in the Great Northern War and offering great value for money at £65.00 GBP.

The subject of the all-in-one boxed set has been a matter of debate in the last few days. Far from being an attempt to strike at the very roots of historical gaming integrity and purity, this package offers a great way of getting into the Great Northern War, historical gaming, and the wonderful world of 6mm.

A base of Swedish infantry

The boxed set includes the following:

  • 1 x Polemos Great Northern War ruleset
  • 1 x Polemos Swedish Army Starter Pack
  • 1 x Polemos Russian Army Starter Pack
  • 2 sets of pre-cut bases.
  • 1 x Swedish flag sheet
  • 1 x Russian flag sheet
  • 1 x Painting and uniform guide for Swedish and Russian armies
  • 4 x Cottage buildings and plinths

(For the record, that's over 500 figures and 6 cannon in the two army packs combined.)

All of the above can be purchased separately, but the combined package represents great value for money.

Polemos GNW and the packs can be obtained in Canada from Milites Minimus, and in the U.S.A from Heritage Studios.

More Polemos rulesets are in development, with the next in line being for the War of Spanish Succession.
