August Storm 1945
The rapid Soviet penetration of Japanese defenses in eastern Manchuria came as a complete surprise to the Japanese who expected to make a slow fighting withdrawal. Knowing that the city of Mutanchiang was of strategic importance, Japanese 5th Army ordered elements of its three forward divisions (124th, 126th and 135th) to deploy within prepared positions within the Laoyehling Mountain region and hold back Soviet assaults. The Soviets, however, well knew the importance of Mutanchiang and were pushing aggressively towards the city along all possible paths. This was one of the few set-piece battles of the Manchurian campaign.
The battle for Mutanchiang ended with the 278th Infantry Regiment's destruction and the withdrawal of Japanese covering units from the city. Japanese forces, harassed by Soviet frontal aviation, withdrew to Hengtaohotzu. The 1st Red Banner Army consolidated its forces to strike westward toward Harbin, while 5th Army turned south toward Ningan and Kirin.
