H21398 SIGNALS, Vol. III: AIRCRAFT RADIO / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1956 publication. 722pp. The somewhat dry title of this book does not do the contents justice, because it is about navigational aids (H2S, Gee, Loran, Oboe and Gee-H) as well as responder beacons, Rebecca/Eureka, combat warning systems, beam approach, ground controlled approach and wireless direction finding. Of the latter item there is a complete history, and the whole of these two volumes gives a detailed description of the development and use of the systems throughout the war. It is a valuable manual in all senses, and gives a clear picture of how aircraft located themselves and found the way to the target and back home. £70.00 GBP
H21399 AIR SUPPORT / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1955 publication. 252pp. This monograph covers the subject of air support of ground forces in all the major theatres of operations in the Second World War. It describes operations in France and the Low countries in 1940, in the Mediterranean, in Burma and in Normandy from 1944. There are 14 significant appendices, one of which relates the history of the German Ground Attack Arm. The book adds to the knowledge of this aspect of the air/land battle, and is a complimentary volume to Air Support in the Second World War (which we also publish) which is arranged in a different way. Readers are strongly advised to purchase both volumes for comparison purposes, and for the differences in emphasis between the two. £35.00 GBP
H21400 AIR SUPPORT IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1945 publication. 212pp. This is a companion volume to Air Support (which we also publish). It has a different emphasis on the subject and, importantly, includes a number of coloured maps not in the other volume. It starts in Norway, continuing through France 1940, the Mediterranean, Burma and Malaya, and then covers the Normandy operations. The illustrations cover important areas of operations and organisation, and include a detailed map of the German defences at Cassino, and of Operations Crusader, Goodwood and Varsity. Once more, readers are advised that this volume should be read in conjunction with Air Support to get a full picture of this important aspect of the air/land battle as fought in the Second World War. £25.00 GBP
H21401 AIR/SEA RESCUE / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1952 publication. 196pp. Air/Sea Rescue was of great importance in the Second World War, for many aircraft had to come down in the Channel and elsewhere, and their rescue from a watery grave was a great achievement. This book covers both the operational side of this service and the equipment needed to try to save airmen from death by drowning or exposure. £22.00 GBP
H21402 CAMPAIGNS IN THE FAR EAST, Vol. I / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1940s publication. 76pp. This first volume of the RAF history of operations in the Far East covers events up to 1941, and starts at the Battle of Tsushima. It is a first class resume of the inter-war period in the Far East and is the first of a series of volumes on this often neglected theatre of war. £10.00 GBP
H21403 CAMPAIGNS IN THE FAR EAST, Vol. II: MALAYA, EAST INDIES AND BURMA / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1940s publication. 264pp. This volume continues the story begun in Volume I, and starts with the last weeks of peace. It then covers the loss of Borneo, air attacks on Singapore and its fall, operations in Sumatra and Java and the First Burmese Campaign. Strengths of both RAF and Japanese air elements are given in detail in the appendices as well as a summary of army strength in Malaya on 7 December 1941 and a note on Japanese air forces in Malaya. £28.00 GBP
H21404 SIGNALS, Vol. V: FIGHTER CONTROL AND INTERCEPTION / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1952 publication. 322pp. Many readers will remember popular films showing fighter control rooms with worried controllers and pretty WAAFs pushing markers around a large map of the south coast of Britain. This book describes the reality and starts with sector control, Biggin Hill and radar in the Battle of Britain. Radar Identification from early days and aircraft interception follow, and the book ends with details of radar control from the 'Lamb' experiments through to radar control in offensive operations. A really good book on what could have been a very dry topic. £35.00 GBP
H21405 FLYING TRAINING, Vol. I: POLICY AND PLANNING / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1952 publication. 292pp. This detailed description of flying training in the RAF covers the period from 1919 to 1944. It is a historical and chronological account of the subject and includes training before the war, the Empire Air Training Scheme, the crisis after May 1940, the development of training from November 1940 and the 'New Deal.' The writing is informative and of great value to all who want to know the real details of how fighter and bomber crew were trained, where and when. £30.00 GBP
H21406 NORTH WEST EUROPE, Vol. I: PLANNING AND PREPARATION OF THE ALLIED AIR FORCE / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1940s publication. 232pp. This is the first in a series of volumes covering the Invasion of France in 1944 from the air point of view. This first volume covers the period from the reorganisation of the RAF for cross-channel operations through to D-Day. It gives detailed information on organisation, deception, the Overlord plans, the employment of airborne forces, the air plan for D-Day, and the strategic and tactical plans to delay enemy reinforcements. Of real significance to all students of D-Day because of the depth of its insight into the planning stages. £25.00 GBP
H21407 NORTH WEST EUROPE, Vol. II: ADMINISTRATIVE PREPARATIONS / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1940s publication. 278pp. There is a military adage which (edited) says "Poor planning produces poor performance" and this was never more true than in the preparation of the Overlord plan. That so much went either as it should, or nearly so, is a tribute to the administrative planning which went on before 6 June 1944. This narrative gives a great deal of information on the subject of the administrative preparations, but it is not a mere catalogue but a lively account of what to many people (service and civilian alike) is a totally non-subject: but it had to be done. The book looks at the reasons for the detailed administration plans, the evolution of strategy and the plans, the agencies involved, the Bolero plan, grand strategy for Overlord, COSSAC, U.S.A.AF, and the important "Mulberry" and "Gooseberry" inventions, supply by air and casevac and where the RAF fitted into the overall plan. Readers will be well rewarded for an exacting read of what is a fundamental document. £30.00 GBP
H21408 MAINTENANCE / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1954 publication. 576pp. This is a history of aircraft maintenance, an essential service of the RAF throughout the war. Aircraft were often damaged by action other than enemy, they needed to be moved, serviced and maintained at all times, and even assembled from kits rather like aircraft models today. It may seem obvious, but the creation and use of a servicing branch was absolutely vital to the well-being of the RAF and the safety of aircrew, and this is the sometimes prosaic, sometimes exciting story of the ones who stayed on the ground. £55.00 GBP
H21409 RAF IN MARITIME WAR / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1940s publication. 406pp. The first of a set of volumes on the history of air power in maritime warfare. The book covers this history from the creation of the RAF to September 1939. Many critics have observed that air cover for convoys was not an RAF priority during the early years of the Second World War; this history shows the attitude of the Air Staff to this eventual problem, and the relationship between the RAF., the Fleet Air Arm and Coastal Command in the period leading up to the outbreak of hostilities. Further volumes will cover the war years, but this volume deserves to be read because it sets the scene for later events. £40.00 GBP
H21410 SIGNALS, Vol. IV: RADAR IN RAID REPORTING / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1950 publication. 676pp. The title is a rather dry one, but the subject matter is fascinating: the radar defences of Great Britain, the Chain Home system, Chain Home in France, RDF reporting during the Battle of Britain, RDF in the Middle and Far East, Chain Home Low and the centimetric wavelength radar and the use of radar in North Africa, D-Day, and against the V Weapons. The whole book looks at what was one of the most significant scientific defences of the United Kingdom throughout the war, and its tactical use abroad. This is a book not to be missed for its importance in the history of the Second World War. £65.00 GBP
H21411 SIGNALS, Vol. VIII: RADIO COUNTERMEASURES / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1950 publication. 400pp. This is a story of acronyms and codewords: "X-Gerat," "Knickebein," "Y-Gerat," and of the electronic warfare between the Germans and the U.K. during World War Two. The strength of the book lies in its detailed description of the problems and the solutions, and again the codewords flow: "tinsel," "Mandrel," "carpet" and many others. The electronic war was one that was fought by the scientific staffs of the respective combatants, and this book tells it as it was. Highly recommended. With 18 appendices and 14 diagrams. £40.00 GBP
H21412 SIGNALS, Vol. VI: RADIO IN MARITIME WARFARE / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1954 publication. 288pp. The RAF was engaged against the enemy in a number of theatres, some of which were the oceans. This is the story of the use of radar against enemy ships and particularly the German U-boat. The development of ASV/radar is covered from inception to centimetric radar, as are German counter-measures, and the involvement of the U.S.A. in the research and production is included. Although a technical subject, the author has managed to make the whole very readable and clear to the lay reader. Very important in any study of the war at sea. £30.00 GBP
H21413 SIGNALS, Vols. I & II: ORGANISATION, DEVELOPMENT AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS / Air Historical Branch Mint paperback reprint of a 1958 publication. 546pp. Volumes I and II of the Signals series were combined into one volume. This two volume reprint looks at the organisation of 26 Group, 60 Group and the Signals Branch at the Air Ministry. One of the elements of C3I is "communication" and the speed of air operations and the need to get information from and to commands was (and is) fundamental to all operational command and control. The first volume deals with just that. The second volume deals with the telecommunications systems developed for RAF use throughout the war. Telecommunications were important for security reasons,: they were much less susceptible to interception (and remember that the Germans sent their most secret messages via teleprinter whenever possible). Although seemingly very ordinary, the story of these systems is all part of the electronic warfare of World War Two. £50.00 GBP
H21414 AIRCRAFT ROCKET INSTALLATIONS / Air Ministry Mint paperback reprint of a 1944 publication. 136pp. This pamphlet covers rocket installations and ammunition as available in 1944. The aircraft include the Typhoon, Mosquito, Beaufighter, Tempest, Spitfire, Brigand and Mustang. Ammunition includes all rocket types. £15.00 GBP
H21415 PARACHUTIST / Pegasus Mint paperback reprint of a 1946 publication. 140pp. A personal account of the training of British paratroops which is of great value to all those interested in the Second World War. The book tells the whole story of jump training from the initial 'synthetic' training to the real thing. It also includes details of the gliders and the men that travelled to war in those flimsy contraptions. The book also includes some very personal recollections of training 'to be lawless £15.00 GBP
H21416 508 PARACHUTE INFANTRY / U.S. Government Mint paperback reprint of a 1946 publication. 132pp. A history of 508 Parachute Infantry from formation at Fort Blanding in 1942 through to the end of the war. Fully illustrated with 15 colour maps. £16.00 GBP
H21417 BELGIAN ARMY (1934) / British Army Mint paperback reprint of a 1934 publication. 310pp. This British Army manual on the Belgian Army was published in 1934, so it covers almost all aspects of the force which faced the Germans in 1940. No later version appeared. It covers every needed aspect of the Belgian Army as well as Belgium and the Belgian Congo. There are chapters on Infantry,Cavalry, Artillery and the services; weapons and equipment are described, as are the rear services, plus the auxiliary units and the Belgian police. £35.00 GBP

H21419 GERMAN RETREAT ACROSS THE SEINE 1944 / British Bombing Analysis Unit Mint paperback reprint of a 1944 publication. 30pp. This is a reprint of an item for which many people have searched for many years. The German retreat across the Seine has been a controversial subject, and although many articles and commentaries refer to this document, few if any quote directly from it. The report was written by the Bombing Analysis Unit of the RAF, and gives a great deal of detail about what happened at the Seine after the Falaise debacle. The figures given contradict the idea that the German Army was wrecked by the time it approached the river, and that few men and very little equipment made the passage to safety on the east bank. Reprinted together with the 3 original maps (at A1 size) showing the crossings used and the bombing offensive against the escaping troops. £35.00 GBP
H21420 BAILEY BRIDGE (1944) WITH AMENDMENTS (1956) / British Army Mint paperback reprint of a 1956 publication. 178pp. The British Army manual for the Bailey Bridge complete with all fold-out plans and diagrams. It covers the organisation and mobility of the German Air Force, ground attack operations, sweeps against aerial targets, defensive patrols, fighter escort, attacks against bombers (split into single- and twin-engined aircraft attacks), special methods of attacking bombers (including rocket attacks), jet and rocket propelled fighter operations, day air defence of Germany, the quality of fighter pilots and commanders throughout the war and a German Air Force evaluation of Allied fighter aircraft, pilots and tactics. It is singularly important because of the complete picture it gives not just of the history, but the doctrine, formation, training and operations of this defence force of desperation. It looks at command structure and the legal position of the Home Guard, and also includes some wise words from veterans of the First and Spanish Civil Wars. In all it presents a very good summary of what the Home Guard was, and its role and station in British society, and is highly recommended to both military and social historians for the period. £20.00 GBP
