Books…

WARS AND BATTLES OF ANCIENT GREECE

Wars and Battles of Ancient Greece The book has context as its focus: each of the battles covered is, where sources permit, placed in its historical, political and social context: why was the battle fought, how was it fought, what was the outcome, and what happened next? No war or battle has ever been fought in isolation – there is always a prelude, a casus belli, and a series of consequences. These are revealed wherever possible for each of the wars and battles in this book. In order to reinforce our focus on context, the book includes chapters covering warfare in civilizations and cultures before Greece, the Greek war machine, and Greek women and conflict. $30.00 USD

Clan Fabius, Defenders of Rome: A History of the Republic's Most Illustrious Family A historical detective work, this book explores the facts and fables of the Republic's most distinguished family. Chapters investigate not only the lives and careers of the Fabii Maximi, but the critical military and political contexts of their days. As a result, readers get not only the story of the Roman Republic's rise and domination of an empire, but a closer look at a family of Romans who made it possible. $35.00 USD

Conquerors of the Roman Empire: The Franks Examines how this relatively small group of Germans came to be overlords of the former Roman province of Gaul, giving their name to France in the process. From their earliest incursions into the Empire, down to their last battle against Romans at the Battle of Casilinum (554), this studies the Frankish way of warfare and assesses its effectiveness. The size and composition of their armies, their weapons (including the characteristic Francisca axe), equipment, and tactics are discussed. Includes 42 color and black-and-white illustrations. $35.00 USD

TMP Special Offer: Save 15%. New price: $29.75 USD

Marengo: The Victory That Placed the Crown of France on Napoleon's Head Meticulously researched using memoirs, reports and regimental histories from both armies, this casts new light on this crucial battle and reveals why Napoleon came so close to defeat and why the Austrians ultimately threw their victory away. Focuses on the leading personalities in the French and Austrian camps, describes the key events leading up to the battle, and covers the complex armistice negotiations which followed. Exposes the full story of Carlo Gioelli, the enigmatic Italian double agent who misled both armies in the prelude to battle. Includes 22 illustrations. $43.00 USD

TMP Special Offer: Save 15%. New price: $36.55 USD

Tanks in Hell: A Marine Corps Tank Company on Tarawa On 20 November 1943, the Second Marine Division launched the first amphibious assault of the Pacific War, directly into the teeth of powerful Japanese defenses on Tarawa. In that blood-soaked invasion, a single company of Sherman tanks, of which only two survived, played a pivotal role in turning the tide from looming disaster to legendary victory. This study uses official documents, memoirs, interviews with veterans, and personal and aerial photographs to follow Charlie Company from its formation, and trace the movement, action – and loss – of individual tanks in this horrific four-day struggle. $35.00 USD

Operation Dynamo: The Evacuation of 340,000 British and French Soldiers to England Operation Dynamo, between 27 May and 4 June, evacuated almost 340,000 French and British troops from the Dunkirk pocket by a miscellaneous fleet of 850 boats, including hundreds of fishing vessels, pleasure boats, lifeboats, or Merchant Navy vessels. Thanks to the sailors' courage but also the RAF pilots' skill, this operation without precedent was a success, which enabled the British to continue to fight the Germans, even though they had to leave behind most of their equipment and weapons. Includes numerous period photos, maps, aircraft profiles, and uniform plates. $18.00 USD

TMP Special Offer: Save 15%. New price: $15.30 USD

Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Lexington 1935 The U.S.S. Lexington (CV-2) was the second aircraft carrier of the Lexington class built by the United States (first was the U.S.S. Langley), but the first used operationally. Includes 166 profiles, double-sided A2 sheet with modeling plans. The history of the U.S.S. Lexington was troubled: in fact it was designed in 1916 to be an atypical battle cruiser, as little armored, but with heavy cannons. Because of the Washington Treaty of 1922 about the reduction of naval armaments, she was reclassified and converted into an aircraft carrier, capable of carrying a flight of 85 aircraft. $37.00 USD

TMP Special Offer: Save 15%. New price: $31.45 USD

Vam Sense: Surviving Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division Arthur Wiknik, Jr., served in Vietnam with Company A 2/506th of the 101st Airborne Division as an infantry squad leader from April 1969 to March 1970. Offers a blend of candor, sarcasm and humor – and it spares nothing and no one in its attempt to accurately convey what really transpired for the combat soldier during this unpopular war. It is not about heroism or glory, mental breakdowns, haunting flashbacks, or wallowing in self-pity. The GIs Wiknik lived and fought with during his year-long tour did not rape, murder or burn villages, were not strung out on drugs, and did not enjoy killing. They were there to do their duty as they were trained, support their comrades, and get home alive. $15.00 USD
