My grand-dad would be proud. He was a sergeant in the 29th's first wave at Omaha Beach, and was wounded by a German machine-gun bullet that hit him 2cm above his heart. He had just gotten over the cliffs when he was wounded.

He recovered in England, and was told he'd be going back overseas to the quietest area of the front, to train greenhorns. They sent him to the "rear area" of the 28th ID, just one week before "every German in the world" (his words, not mine) came through the trees.

He fought through Germany, was on a transport in the Panama Canal, headed for the Pacific when news of the bomb hit, and passed away in 1999.
