The Battle of Majuba Hill: The Transvaal Campaign, 1880-1881

The Battle of Majuba Hill: The Transvaal Campaign, 1880-1881 The ignominious rout of a British force at the Battle of Majuba on 27 February 1881, and the death of its commander, Major General Sir George Pomeroy-Colley, was the culminating British disaster in the humiliating Transvaal campaign of 1880-1881 in South Africa. For the victorious Boers who were rebelling against the British annexation of their republic in 1877, Majuba became the symbol of Afrikaner resistance against British imperialism. On the flip side, Majuba gave the late Victorian British army its first staggering experience of modern warfare and signaled the need for it to reassess its training and tactics. Includes 1 color photo, 1 color illustrations, 35 black-and-white photos, 14 black-and-white illustrations, and six maps. $40.00 USD

By Fire & Bayonet: Grey's West Indies Campaign of 1794 There have been few books about Grey's glorious (but ultimately ill-fated) West Indies campaign in the early years of the long and terrible wars of 1793-1815, yet five of the subalterns in Grey's expeditionary force went on to command divisions in Wellington's Peninsula army; another two commanded the Iron Duke's Royal Artillery; and one (Richard Fletcher) – famously – the Royal Engineers. The tactics used by Sir Charles Grey were as far removed as can be imagined from the traditional image of the two-deep British line delivering massed volleys at pointblank range. The invasions of Martinique, St. Lucia, and Guadeloupe were raids undertaken by special forces, who were instructed to operate in open order, in silence, and at bayonet-point; all attacks went in with unloaded muskets.

Most of the heavy-duty fighting was undertaken by converged flank battalions, grenadiers, and light infantrymen – assembled under hand-picked field officers and used as stormtroopers in every major assault; here were French Revolutionary War tactics that are largely unexplored and largely undocumented (at least in modern times). $50.00 USD

Olmutz to Torgau: Horace St. Paul and the Campaigns of the Austrian Army in the Seven Years War 1758-60 Following the disastrous conclusion to the campaign of 1757, the Austrian Army regrouped in Bohemia. Meanwhile, the King of Prussia sought to complete his reconquest of Silesia before seizing the initiative and thrusting directly towards Vienna. In his path stood the town of Olmutz, which would prove to be a high-tide mark of the war. Over the next three years, Austria and her allies inflicted a series of heavy defeats on the Prussians at Hochkirch, Kunersdorf, Dresden, Maxen, Landeshut, and Glatz. Throughout these campaigns, Horace St. Paul – an English gentleman volunteer – continued to accompany Marshal Daun. He noted the day-to-day progress of the army and recorded the essential connective tissue which links the great events of these campaigns – often highlighting occasions where a general action was expected, but does not occur. The text is accompanied by 242 plates of maps and statistical information, as well as a detailed gazetteer and lists of persons and regiments named. $70.00 USD

Waterloo: The Truth at Last – Why Napoleon Lost the Great Battle During October 2016, Paul Dawson visited French archives in Paris to continue his research surrounding the events of the Napoleonic Wars. Some of the material he examined had never been accessed by researchers or historians before, the files involved having been sealed in 1816. These seals remained unbroken until Paul was given permission to break them to read the contents. Many of the accepted stories concerning the battle are analyzed through accounts (some 200 in all) previously unpublished, mainly derived through French sources, with startling conclusions. Most significantly of all is the revelation of exactly how, and why, Napoleon was defeated. $45.00 USD

The Victorio Campaign 1879: I Will Not Surrender the Hair of a Horse's Tail This volume covers the background to the Victorio Campaign of 1879-1881. In the early 1870s, a mixture of diplomacy and successful military campaigning by General George Crook led to the formation of several reservations for various Apache groups such as the Mescalero, Chiricahua and Western Apaches. Almost before the ink was dry on these treaties, an effort was made to rationalize this arrangement by placing the Apaches upon one reservation (the concentration policy). Includes 67 photos, 6 diagrams, 11 maps, and 22 tables. $50.00 USD

Straf Batallion: Hitler's Penal Battalions When war broke out in 1939, Hitler created Strafbattalion (Penal Battalion) units to deal with incarcerated members of the Wehrmacht, as well as subversives. His order stated that any first-time convicted soldier could return to his unit after he had served a portion of his sentence in a special probation corps before the enemy. Beginning in April 1941, convicted soldiers – even those sentenced to death – who had shown exceptional bravery or meritorious service were allowed to rejoin their original units. However, those in probation units were expected to undertake dangerous operations at the front. Refusal entailed enforcement of the original sentence. The soldiers who win back an honorable place in the national community had done everything that was asked of them – risky advance teams, spying and shock troops, and laying mines under enemy fire. This book examines the penal units, their combat history, and order of battle. $37.00 USD

Strategy & Tactics #310; American Civil War This ACW game gives players a chance to change the historical outcome. The Confederate player must maintain a viable economic and political core, while the Union player attempts to divide and conquer the southern states. Victory is checked every turn – Union progress can have political consequences or possibly end the game if either player fails to achieve expectations. During each quarterly turns, players recruit additional forces, then conduct a pair of impulses. During each impulse, each player moves forces and fight battles. Movement rates are high, but enemy forces can react by retreating, blocking further movement, or counterattacking. Battles are decided by a combination of good leaders and relative strength. The Confederacy starts with a decided advantage in leadership. Union leaders appear only after fighting battles – the Union player may have to lose a few battles to get the leaders needed to win the war. Components: One 22 x 34-inch map, 280 counters, and magazine. $40.00 USD
