About A.G. Hales

Alfred Arthur Greenwood "Smiler" Hales was born in Adelaide in 1860. His first book detailed his adventures traveling around Australia working as a farm hand and lead him to travel in England and America before returning to found a number of publications in his homeland. Later, Hales joined the Daily News as a war correspondent and covered the Second Boer War in a manner often critical of the British. He was wounded and captured by the Boers and was only released at the end of the conflict. Despite his experiences, he went on to work as a war correspondent during the Russo-Japanese War and First World War.
