Simply to make casting easier. When the poses are pretty much the same it saves the caster having to peer at every figure and determine which has a certain type of helmet or crest and make sure 2 of each are included.

It also means that there is no wastage of a whole pack with miscasts of a single figure – all 16 figures on a mould will not always come out so the majority of the 8 figure packs will have 2 of each pose but some may not.

I've just posed some pics of the Roman greens on the yahoo group if anyone is interested.
