It includes details of all anti-U-Boat operations, the Bay Air Offensive, the anti-shipping war in NW European Waters, the final phase of enemy blockade running in the Far East, enemy major units (Scahrnhorst, Tirpitz, Lutzow, Admiral Hipper), the bombing of enemy ports and naval objectives, aerial minelaying, and the air defence of shipping in Home Waters. There are many appendices to fill out the facts, and a complete series of charts showing U-Boat locations during the period. £110.00 GBP

H21604 MANUAL OF FIELD WORKS (ALL ARMS) / War Office, Mint paperback reprint of a 1921 publication. 436pp.: Trenches were the predominant facet of field engineering of the First World War. This publication essentially gathers together all the lessons learned about trenches but also includes much other extremely helpful instruction – on tools and materials, siting of trenches and machinegun emplacements, obstacles, how to set up a defensive system, camouflage, working parties, tools and equipment, and also includes details for planning camps adnd organising roads, tracks and even tramways. Essentially a detailed and exact treatise on field engineering, a subject that engaged so many soldiers at the time. Needless to say the lessons of World War One were disregarded by the Germans who brought in the war of movement – but that is another story and another set of pamphlets! £40.00 GBP
H21605 TRENCH WARFARE / War Office, Mint paperback reprint of a 1916 pamphlet. 106pp.: The pamphlet declares that "Trench fighting" [was] "only a Phase of Warfare." The British Army still held to its age-old basic precept that the only way to win a battle was by attack. Trench warfare was the interim phase; an interim phase that had lasted over two years and was to continue for two more years. The pamphlet gives a very good picture of how the British conducted trench warfare as well as of the trenches themselves, and how they were to be planned and organised. Readers of this pamphlet should also read the later "Platoon Training 1918" to see how doctrine developed in the two years between the issue of these works. £10.00 GBP
H21606 PLATOON TRAINING 1918 / War Office, Mint paperback reprint of a 1918 pamphlet. 30pp.: This pamphlet was issued for the guidance of platoon commanders in 1918. It is essentially a tactical pamphlet and the illustrations give guidance to the young officer when planning and leading an attack. It is essentially based on the underlying doctrine of the British Army – the attack is the best form of action. Defence is given one long paragraph, the rest of the pamphlet being devoted to the newish concept of fire and movement. It is for this reason seminal in its importance – it shows how at long last the new concept was engaging the military mind, and how the old concepts of artillery supported attacks in lines at company and battalion strength were beginning to be phased out in favour of smaller probing attacks and infiltration. Well worth studying to see how tactics were evolving at the lower level. £5.00 GBP
H21607 RAPID TRAINING OF RECRUITS / An Instructor, Mint paperback reprint of a 1916 pamphlet. 186pp.: By 1916 the British Army was always short of trained soldiers – the old pre-war men were drastically reduced in numbers and the Kitchener and other recruitment schemes had produced many men – who were of course untrained. Training was fundamental to the continuance of operations in France and elsewhere, but it had to be done as quickly as possible to give the new recruits some rudimentary knowledge of how to be soldiers. This pamphlet gives details of how these raw recruits were to be trained as fast as possible to get them into the front lines. There, luck and older soldiers would, it was hoped, keep some of them alive. The pamphlet is extremely valuable in letting the reader see inside the army training system of the period, and also allows a considerable insight into just how things worked at the mid-point in the war. £15.00 GBP
H21608 WHEN I JOIN THE RANKS / "The Major", Mint paperback reprint of a 1914 pamphlet. 122pp.: A Vade Mecum for the new soldier issued (or sold) for all those joining the ranks in the First World War. It is in the style of the period – somewhat patronising, and full of the ethos of the "Great Army Family." However it does give an insight into how the army worked at the time, particularly with regard to new recruits and how it looked at them. An interesting background read which helps in any comparison with the army nearly 100 years ago and today. £10.00 GBP
H21609 EMPLOYMENT OF TANKS AT CAMBRAI / Barker, Maj. E.S. Mint paperback reprint of a 1933 pamphlet. 24pp.: A critical analysis of the use by the British Army of Tanks in the attack at Cambrai in which "it was decide to strike a theatrical blow against Germany in order to restore British prestige." For once an attack was to succeed! The sorry story of the First World War is one known to many, and this analysis of the success at Cambrai shows the potential of the tank, something often unconsidered by British Staff Officers at the time. £6.00 GBP
