Battle for Novi - August 15th, 1799
The Battle of Novi is an interesting battle where the French are defending the heights around the northern Italian town of Novi. Forced to engage on this ground, the tired, understrength and hungry French army under General Joubert faced a legendary general. Sometimes we must throw the spotlight on the many hundreds of engagements not regularly gamed, and the second Battle of Novi is one of them.
Background: 1799 witnessed one of the finest generals in Europe arrive in Northern Italy at the head of a sizable Russian and Austrian force, a man with decades of experience fighting the Western powers and the Ottoman horde.
Seemingly, as if by some miraculous touch, this Russian career officer simply defeated any general sent against him by the nascent French Republic. Scherer, MacDonald, and Moreau had all succumbed to his strategic and tactical genius.
Russian General Suvarov: If only his star would have shined longer. Now, the small Italian town of Novi would be the site that Suvarov had chosen to meet his foe. Suvarov was intent on bringing the newly arrived French General Joubert to battle before any further reinforcements arrived for the enemy.
Joubert, upon being informed of the enemy's advance, immediately ordered his army to deploy on the Novi heights and await the numerically superior allies. Joubert was to meet his death at this engagement.
Scenario: Beginning at the 6am Day Segment, the French must prevent the Allies from taking Novi.
