Let your Romanians Break Loose!
Battle for Kishinev: July 15th, 1941
Attempting to wipe away the stain of Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, Romanian forces joined their German allies in the attack on Soviet Russia on July 2nd, 1941. The fighting would prove fierce and underscore a number of weaknesses in the Romanian armed services, but these were overlooked for national pride purposes.
The prime goal of Romanian forces was the Besserabian capitol of Kishinev, and they were close to gaining their goal by July 13th. On the 14th, Gen. Atanasiu resumed the attack south along the Orhei-Kishinev highway with his 54th Corp. The attack met fierce resistance but a breach was created.
On the 15th, Gen. Ciuperca brought forward the Romanian 1st Royal Armored Division and pushed them through the gap. The tankers pushed deep along the highway route and were met head-on by a counterattack from the Soviet 47th Tank Division.
