Saalfeld, Jena, Auerstaedt: the great battles of Napoleon's decisive 1806 campaign as the Prussians and their Saxon allies tried to halt the Grande Armée at the peak of its abilities and fame.
Although something of a reluctant and coerced ally of Prussia, the Saxons made up around twenty percent of the allied army that mobilised against Napoleon in the late summer of 1806, but anyone wanting to collect a Saxo-Prussian army in 15/18mm for this period will have struggled to find appropriate figures in the earlier pre-1810 Saxon uniform.
Our new 18mm range now fills that gap. Sculpted by Alan Marsh and designed to compliment the existing AB Figures range of 'Jena' Prussians, all the principal musketeer, grenadier, light and heavy cavalry, and artillery uniforms of the 1806 Saxon army are represented. All figures have the long pigtail of the powdered queue hair style - still considered an essential part of military fashion by both the Saxon and Prussian armies at this time, and the Cuirassiers are depicted without the cuirass which does not appear to have been worn in combat by Saxon heavy cavalry.
The Saxon army's only hussar regiment can even be recreated using our officially approved conversion of the hussar figures from the AB Figures 'Jena' Prussian range. The Schützen (or "Sharpshooters") only made up a small proportion of each infantry regiment in 1806, but we have included them with the distinctive plume on their bicornes for completeness. For artillery guns we would suggest using Prussian pieces from our AB Figures 15/18mm range.
These figures are intended primarily for the 1806 campaign, but seasoned Napoleonic gamers will have quickly noted that apart from the small detail of the 1806 specific hair style, our new figures can also be used for the Saxon contingent that served as Napoleon's allies in 1809. The Schützen / Sharpshooters figures in the range now come into their own, as in 1809 they were all combined to form two separate Schützen battalions.
As Philip Haythornthwaite has pointed out, it is perhaps unfair that the Saxon army of the Napoleonic wars is most remembered for its association with the disaster of 1806; the army's 'rout' at Wagram under the command of controversial French Marshal Bernadotte in 1809; and the 'treacherous' defection to the allies at Leipzig in 1813. Now you can collect an 1806 Saxon army and help to restore Saxon military prestige!
