Australia's very own Grumpy Miniatures have released a new range of 15mm Landsknechts for 1550-1590, and these are now available from Eureka Miniatures.

Landsknecht Arquebusier 1550-90

The Landsknechts were the famous mercenary soldiers of the Renaissance Wars, noted for their flamboyant and colorful appearance, as well as their suspect loyalties to anything other than cold, hard cash! Mainly of German descent, they were universally employed by all sides, and would often turn up fighting on both sides of an engagement. Typically of the period, the majority of them formed up in dense blocks of pikemen - but they were receptive to new ideas, such as the use of the Arquebus, and they employed a steadily increasing number of supporting firearms.

Many existing ranges of Landsknecht miniatures tend to focus on the earlier period covering the Italian Wars (1494-1559), but Grumpy (AKA sculptor Victor Pocilujko) has chosen to represent his Landsknechts in the uniforms of the more neglected wars of the later 16th Century. This means gamers can use these Landsknechts for a wide range of other conflicts such as the final battles of the Italian Wars, the French Wars of Religion, and the early stages of the Dutch Revolt.

Landsknecht Pikemen 1550-90

It is perhaps the Landsknechts' elaborate appearance that really sets them apart from most other Renaissance warriors - with deliberately slashed clothing exposing multicolored shirts and leggings beneath doublets and breeches. There is plenty of rich material here for the keen miniatures painter to explore, and with multiple figure variants available for most of the range codes, you can build some exciting-looking units (there are as many as 12 different variants of pikemen).

GRU-LAN01 - Landsknecht Pikeman, 1550-90*
GRU-LAN02 - Landsknecht Halberdier, 1550-90

(Same as GRU-LAN01 but supplied with Halberd)

GRU-LAN03 - Landsknecht Arquebusier, 1550-90
GRU-LAN04 - Landsknecht Officer, 1550-90
GRU-LAN05 - Landsknecht servant boy, carrying officer's two-handed sword, 1550-90
GRU-LAN06 - Landsknecht standard bearer, 1550-90
GRU-LAN07 - Landsknecht fifer, 1550-90
GRU-LAN08 - Landsknecht drummer, 1550-90
