BATTLE OF BAYON
September 12-13, 1944
Lorraine, Moselle River Region, France
Looking to envelope the provincial capital of Nancy, General Eddy's XII Corp devised to make a series of attacks both north and south of the city in hopes of gaining a foothold on the Eastern side of the Moselle River.
The U.S. 80th Infantry Division would make a series of crossings to the north of the city, whilst the U.S. 35th Infantry Division would attempt the same to the south. Initial attacks by the 80th were repulsed, and this caused Eddy to look south. The 134th Regiment of the 35th made a crossing on the 10th, only to see the German 15th Panzer Grenadier Division launch a counterattack and crush this crossing. Further south around the towns of Lorey and Bayon, the 137th Regiment made a crossing and was able to secure a lodgement.
Acting quickly, a pontoon bridge was thrown up, and the 320th Regiment crossed to further secure the bridgehead. Orders went out for elements of the 4th Armored Division to make for Bayon and surge forward - the goal was to sweep behind the city of Nancy from the south. Realizing the danger this lodgement posed, the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division, supported by the 553rd Volksgrenadier Division, were ordered to crush this bridgehead. The early morning hours of 13 September would see the head-on collision of these forces.
