WATERLOO ROUT & RETREAT: The French Perspective

WATERLOO ROUT & RETREAT: The French Perspective Fourth volume in series depicts the often neglected final phase – the rout and retreat of Napoleon's army. The text is based exclusively on French eyewitness accounts, which give an inside view of the immediate aftermath of the battle and carry the story through to the army's disbandment in late 1815. Many French officers and soldiers wrote more about the retreat than they did about the catastrophe of Waterloo itself. Their recollections give a fascinating insight to the psyche of the French soldier. They also provide a first-hand record of their experiences and the range of their reactions, from those who deserted the colors and made their way home, to those who continued to serve faithfully when all was lost. Napoleon's own flight from Waterloo is an essential part of the narrative, but the main emphasis is on the fate of the beaten French army as it was experienced by eyewitnesses who lived through the last days of the campaign. $40.00 USD

A SCOTS GREY AT WATERLOO: The Remarkable Story of Sergeant William Clarke William Clarke of Prestonpans, Scotland, joined the 2nd Royal North British Dragoons, the Scots Greys, in 1803. Clarke had risen to the rank of sergeant by the time the regiment was ordered to Belgium on the news that Napoleon had escaped from Elba. Forming part of what became known as the 'Union' Brigade, the Scots Greys played a key role in Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The John Rylands Library, Manchester, recently acquired William Clarke's 600-page, handwritten memoir describing his enlistment and military career, the highlight of which was the Waterloo campaign, which he describes in unusual detail in the vernacular of the day, presented and annotated by the renowned historian Garth Glover.

Follow the movements of the Scots Greys throughout the three days from Quatre-Bras to that climatic encounter on the Mont St. Jean. Clarke naturally portrays the charge of the Union Brigade in dramatic and heroic terms, but he claims that the man who led the charge, Major General William Ponsonby, was killed by a musketball and not cut down by French cavalry, as is usually stated, for recklessly charging too far. After the battle, Clarke was part of the burial party. He then graphically describes the sad scene, as he does the trail of the defeated French army as the pursuing Prussians cut a merciless path on their way to Paris. $40.00 USD

BUILDING FOR BATTLE: Hitler's D-Day Defences What awaited the Allied landing forces – many of them suffering the effects of sea sickness when delivered into the surf on June 6, 1944 – were key elements in the formidable defenses of Hitler's vaunted 'Atlantic Wall'. The Wall was a 2,500-mile chain of various types of fortifications stretching from the North Cape to the Bay of Biscay. That portion of the German defenses between Caen to the east and Cherbourg to the west was particularly menacing, due largely to the planning and implementations of Feldmarschall Erwin Rommel, appointed by Hitler to take charge of the Atlantic Wall defenses. Includes 75 color illustrations and 75 black-and-white illustrations.

This revisits many of the locations within the five-beach landing area of the invasion forces. It focuses on the various aspects of the German fortifications, the types of defensive systems employed against the American, British and Canadian invaders, and the results experienced by both invaders and defenders in the Allied struggle to gain and hold possession of that pathway to Berlin. $40.00 USD

And Don't Forget the Magazines…

World at War #58: Stalin Moves West

World at War #58: Stalin Moves West Two-player strategic-level hypothetical simulation of a potential World War II campaign in which the Third Reich did not invade the Soviet Union in 1941, and instead Stalin launched an invasion of central and western Europe. The map depicts the Soviet Union (USSR), the Greater German Reich, the General Government (German-occupied Poland), Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia as they were in 1941.

Each hex on the map represents about 70 kilometers from side to opposite side, and each game turn represents one month in summer and two in winter. Units are corps/armies with supply, leadership, and air support covered as unique support units on the map. The uncertainty of the effect of the purges is depicted by the Soviet units being deployed to show their 'untried' status, where even the Soviet player is unsure of the combat value of any given unit. The game has several different scenarios which look at various situations in which such a war might have occurred. Components: 22x34-inch map, 176 die-cut counters, and magazine. $35.00 USD

TMP Special Offer: Save 10%. New price: $31.50 USD
