I happen to do NVA re-enactment from time to time, and their helmets are field grey with helmet nets, not khaki like the box art….

True.
But to be fair, I've seen photos in which NVA soldiers have a helmet cover made of Strichmuster fabric. The example I have (which I bought from a militaria dealer back in the early '90s) came with what appears to be the hood from a light jacket. Stretched over the front brim and pinned under the back, it looks a lot like those photos. But yes, certainly wearing the helmet with the net is far more common.

Speaking of NVA helmets, I recall back in the '80s and before East German helmets were extremely uncommon in the West. Thus collectors would pay 2-300$ for one. I suspect those same collectors felt a tad silly when after the Wall fell, the market got flooded with ex-NVA helmets and could be bought for as low as $10 USD! I think I paid about $15 USD for my helmet with the "ersatz helmet cover" and unissued net.

One thing I will say about the NVA helmet is it's got a very comfortable liner. It's made out of soft suede type leather and open cell foam. It's certainly more comfortable to wear than previous models of German helmet!

Volksarmee

The Russian BMP-1 is the successor to Germany's ground-breaking Hanomag halftrack of the Second World War. It carries the Schützen into battle in relative safety, then gives them fire support as they launch their attack.

Mounting an AT-3 Sagger missile, the BMP-1 also protects the infantry from enemy panzers.

The company's riflemen are armed with the classic AKM assault rifle, or MPi KM (Maschinenpistole Kalashnikow Modernisiert) submachine-gun as the East Germans called them. Each squad is also equipped with an RPK squad automatic weapon, disposable RPG-18 anti-tank rockets, and the powerful RPG-7 anti-tank rocket launcher.
