Several years ago (10+) we played JR-2 a lot. It was a regimental level ACW game. We'd base four figs to a stand and if I remember right 4 – 6 stands made a regiment. Then 3 – 5 regiments made a brigade, so many brigades made a division and so many divisions made a Corp. Each regiment has a morale and weapon levels. Now we didn't have enough figs to make divisions to game with. But we'd pool our regiments together and we could get some pretty good size Brigades fighting it out.

I remember having a lot of fun with the rules. They came out with JR-3. A few in the group picked up the new set but by then several of us were starting to move onto other projects. I remember playing JR-3 a couple times but didn't really get a good enough feeling for it to spend the money to buy the new rule set. I don't remember them being bad or not fun, it just wasn't JR-2. Sorry I can't remember specific details.

So with all that rambling behind us, I could see with some good modifications it would make a fun AWI regimental level game.
