L'Aigle Napoleonic Rules Out Now

Hello all,

Having had a strong hand in the designing of the rules, I would like to answer your queries/comments.
To begin, I don't know Age of Eagles. I was inspired however by DBM, Fire and Fury, and Warfare in the Age of Reason, although the latter's contributions have crashed along the way.
DBM inspired the movement system with march and tactical moves, although the 'group' concept was completely rethought, because the grouping of stands in a command does Napoleonics no justice. As a result, the action points that a command gets per turn, are available in equal measure to all units within that command.
Fire and Fury inspired the 'morale' rating i.e. 6/5/3. This proved adequate to absorb dropping fighting ability in a ruleset with hardly any morale tests. The spent factor (3 in this case) indicates total loss of combat effectiveness, and the unit flees of the table, and can be removed if it no longer influences the movement of other units.
The firing table also, was inspired by Fire and Fury. But I have opted for a simple formula that sits behind the big table, so that players can quickly calculate fire on their fingers.
Combat, charge test and a few other things are either derived from a very early set of l'Aigle rules that we wrote as a now extinct club 15 years ago, or are ideas of our own.
The bottom line is that the game must move, albeit without losing the Napoleonic character.

The website does list the battles that were fought 200 years ago, although we only started in 2006, and are a little behind at the moment. Furtunately, Napoleon has given us some respite until Vimiero, allowing us to catch up. Perhaps we can do 1805 in between.

Basing: the size of the bases is not derived from any other set of rules, but is guided by the need to move stands with several figures around, rather than individual ones, and by the necessity to remove whole stands as casualties without removing too much in one go. 4 inf per stand seemed to much, and 2 too little. 3 is a good flexible size.

The 18th century derivative is unfortunately lagging far behind the final version of the Napoleonic rules, and needs to be updated rather urgently. This all could be a full time occupation, so things are sometimes left in limbo.

Our website is being redone, and will in a month's time be more communicative.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

Best regards
