It was a very hard Christmas when the 1st Canadian Division fought in the Italian city of Ortona, 20th-28th December 1943. Fighting on the streets of this small town on the Adriatic coast was compared only to Stalingrad and the Warsaw Uprising in WWII. After a bloody week, Canadians were able to push the 1st Fallschirmjaeger Division to the north. Then the Allies started a battle in the Cassino area in late January 1944.
