White Eagles
Near Mokra, Poland
September 1st, 1939At roughly 0500 hours on September 1st, 1939, elements of the German 10th Army crossed the German-Polish border, initiating the invasion of Poland (and WWII). Elements of three divisions, 31st Infantry as well as 1st and 4th Panzer Divisions, moved on the towns of Krzepice and Starokrzepice, taking both after brushing aside Polish border units. German forces then turned their attention to driving deeper into Polish territory, with the towns of Mokra and Miedzno being the next objectives of 4th Panzer.
In the early hours, with the sun rising and mist still hugging the earth, German motorcycle and other reconnaissance units edged forward, not realizing that their drive was taking them right into the dug-in positions of the Wolynska Cavalry Brigade. Being the connection between the 7th and 30th&bsp;Infantry Divisions, the cavalry was holding critical ground and had chosen their positions well. The day would prove Polish combat prowess, and that the Germans had a lot to learn still about mobile warfare.
