The PC game engine is derived from the TT rules. Areas that are closest to the TT are the combat and unit cohesion mechanisms. There are significant differences in the area of movement and in the use of commanders from the TT rules. In addition all Battle Groups occupy a single hex each so considerations of Battle Group formations from the TT rules are completely missing from the PC version. Movement and combat is implemented one BG at a time so in some ways the PC version has some of the feel of the DBx games with single element moves.

The Rise of Rome supplement substantially adds to the value of the game and now provides the ability to create armies for a given points value based on lists derived from the TT lists. This greatly enhances the options available especially for multi-player PBEM games. The AI enhancements were originally due to be released with the RoR supplement but have now been delayed to the next patch.
